What is the Music Hub Investment Programme?

What are Music Hubs?

Music Hubs are partnerships of schools, local authorities, community groups, music organisations, industry and more. They are coordinated by a Hub Lead Organisation.

Music Hubs deliver and support high quality music education for children and young people within a local area, covering every part of England between them.

On behalf of the Department for Education, we’ve been searching for new Hub Lead Organisations who will lead a new generation of Music Hubs from September 2024.

On Monday 8 April 2024, we notified applicants of the outcomes of that process. We will publicly announce the new Hub Lead Organisations in early May, after the pre-election period for local elections has ended.

£101m investment

£101m investment

43 new Hub Lead Organisations will share more than £76m to coordinate music education through strategic partnerships in the 2024-2025 academic year.

There will also be an additional £25m to invest in new musical instruments, equipment and technology, including instruments for children and young people with special education needs or disabilities.

This investment of more than £100m will help Hubs to deliver music lessons in schools and outside of schools. It will support them to run music ensembles, provide music training for teachers and more.

This helps us to achieve the ambitions of the National Plan for Music Education and our 2020-30 strategic vision, Let’s Create, of ensuring the creativity of all children and young people is valued and given the chance to flourish, no matter who they are, where they go to school, or where they spend their free time.

The National Plan for Music Education, ‘The power of music to change lives’, set out how the government plans to build on the success of Music Hubs.

The National Plan also announced that we would carry out an investment process on behalf of the Department for Education to appoint new Hub Lead Organisations.

Throughout this process, we worked with the music, education, youth, creative and cultural sectors to learn how we might build on the success of the Music Hubs programme. Their expertise and knowledge helped to shape the Music Hubs Investment Programme and the new Music Hub areas.
