About the fund

About the fund

We’re partnering with the Danish Arts Foundation, Arts Council Norway and Julie’s Bicycle to support a third year of the International Touring and Environmental Responsibility fund. This unique programme aims to foster relationships between artists and companies based in Denmark, Norway, and England, supporting them to develop new, environmentally responsible approaches to international touring and collaboration.

Travel and touring are essential to creativity and culture, but they come at a cost. As the urgency of the climate crisis increases, so does the need for our sector to fully understand its touring footprint, and to sustain a means of sharing art which supports our transition to a global low carbon future.

This programme aims to support performing arts professionals in England, Norway, and Denmark to tackle these challenges head on.

Funded projects

Previously funded projects

In the first two years of the programme, we partnered with the Danish Arts Foundation and the Danish Embassy to support the delivery of this fund. Since the programme was launched in 2021, 40 organisations and individuals across England and Denmark have participated.

Upon completion of the programme, participants are invited to apply for funding to test new approaches and concepts that originated from the programme.

Some of the partnerships and projects that we have supported in the past include:

  • Liv Larsen & Eliot Smith Dance: MERGE Coalfield to Landscape
  • Aarhus Festuge, Bora Bora, Askonas Holt & Pavilion Dance South West: Deep Touring Model For Dance
  • Lydenskab, China Plate, Himherandit, Sam Redway & ATC: Deep Touring Community Empowerment
  • Helsingør Teater and In Between Time: Artist as Changemaker
  • Mind the Gap, Fast Familiar and Wildtopia: Wild/Fast/Mind
  • CPH Stage and LIFT: International Touring and Environmental Responsibility

These projects represent innovative ideas and collaborations that aim to push the boundaries of international touring and explore new ways to address environmental and sustainability concerns within the performing arts sector.

Delivery plan

Helping the cultural sector to work internationally

We are delivering this initiative in partnership with the Danish Arts Foundation and Arts Council Norway. This is one of a series of international collaborations between Arts Council England and other cultural agencies.

To help us achieve the vision of our strategy for 2020-2030, Let’s Create, we’ve set out the work we’ll deliver over the next three years in our Delivery Plan 2021-24. It includes a series of actions which fall under five different themes, one of which is ‘Helping the cultural sector to work internationally’.

Other international programmes include the Arts Infopoint UK initiative offering advice on practical issues relating to artist mobility and the Cultural Bridge programme.
