Arts Council England is joining the Eurovision 2023 celebrations with funding for cultural events as the world comes to Liverpool.

With the final on Saturday there is plenty to see and do in the city as the UK hosts Eurovision on behalf of 2022 winners, Ukraine.

There are lots of ways to get involved in Eurovision and culture and creativity is a great way to celebrate. Arts Council England are proud to have supported a wide range of activity for this iconic occasion:

  •  Arts Council England funded organisations in Liverpool have come together en masse to embrace and support the Eurovision moment: offerings include Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse theatres getting into the Eurovision spirit with a cabaret love letter to all things music and Liverpool; the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra aiming for douze points with a classical concert of Eurovision hits, and Liverpool’s Royal Court wowing crowds with a brand new Eurovision-inspired comedy A Thong for Europe. We were also delighted to see new national portfolio organisation Liverpool Lighthouse’s ‘Lighthouse Choir’ and ‘Love & Joy Gospel Choir’ feature on Eurovision Welcomes the World on the BBC.

  • We have invested in EuroFestival running until 14 May, focusing on contemporary and classical music activity including Welcome to Eurotopia - a ‘Supergroup’ collaboration between Ukrainian creatives and Liverpool musicians in a post-song contest moment – and a free performance of English National Opera does Eurovision. This unique celebration allows Liverpool residents and visitors to share in the Eurovision celebrations as reimagined by UK and Ukrainian artists.

  • A series of post-Festival legacy projects will also extend the impact and will support continued international collaboration to build on Liverpool’s status as a UNESCO Music City.

  • We’re also pleased to have supported dot-art’s collaboration with one of our national portfolio organisations Open Eye Gallery, to curate HOME, the UK’s largest exhibition of Ukrainian photography developed with 49 partners at 44 sites across Liverpool.

Jennifer Cleary, Director, Combined Arts & North, said: “What better way to demonstrate how we are united by music! The combined talents of artists, creatives and musicians from the UK and Ukraine will make both EuroFestival and this year’s Eurovision one to remember.”

Darren Henley, Chief Executive, Arts Council England, said: “This joyful collaboration between the UK and Ukraine displays how musicians and artists can bring happiness to people’s everyday lives, just like Eurovision itself does every year. We’re proud to support both EuroFestival and legacy projects in Liverpool to showcase this country’s brilliant creativity on a global stage.”
