Championing children’s creativity

Championing children’s creativity

We feel passionately about the creative lives of children and young people and want to ensure that their voices and experiences are heard and celebrated.

Over lockdown we recognised that young people were finding new ways of expressing themselves through creativity, so we worked closely with our five partner organisations to launch five challenges over the summer holidays to capture their experiences of lockdown.

BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art invited young people to take part in Foundation Club, their free summer series of online workshops and critical discussions. Working together with artists, young people explored and created sculpture, poetry, film, spoken word and animation (among many more!) to share the things they care most about in this world and the things they want to change.

Company Three built upon their project Coronavirus Time Capsule to create One Minute in the Middle of a Pandemic. Young people form youth theatres across the UK were invited to use video, audio, performance, visual art, writing and music to capture a minute from the perspective of a teenager living through this momentous period.

Dancefest’s #HalfAMinuteMovie, a 30-second film asked young people to be inspired by a new skill, a first, an exhilarating new experience or a life lesson learnt at home. Their creative and varied responses reflect the multitude of emotions young people have experienced during lockdown.

English National Opera worked with children and young people to produce Lockdown Aria, with creative work inspired by the concept of an Aria – a single character sharing their inner emotional world and thoughts with an audience. Their projects spans a variety of art forms including dance, spoken word, music and poetry.

Heart n Soul incorporated The Way I See It into their digital Do Your Own Thing sessions, supporting young people with learning disabilities to take part in a range of art forms including music, dance, radio, DJing, visual arts and digital arts. Do Your Own Thing helps young people express themselves through creativity and stay connected to each other during the pandemic.
