The Digital Culture Compass is a new, free online toolkit, here to help you use digital technology more effectively in your organisation. But how does it work and what can it do for you?

Set the standard

The Digital Culture Compass has a Charter, setting out simple best practice to guide you when you’re using digital technology at your organisation.

The Charter will help you improve your work by making sure it’s focussed on core values, centred on people’s needs and responsive to change.

Get a picture of where you’re at

The Tracker in the Digital Culture Compass helps you understand your organisation’s strengths and weaknesses when it comes to using digital technology.

You can assess your work by answering a number of questions. Once you know your current status, you can use the Tracker to identify where you’d like to improve and how you can make things better.

There’s a step-by-step guide on the different ways you can do this – depending on how in-depth you’d like to go.

Cover every base

The Tracker covers a range of topics to make sure its relevant to lots of different types and sizes of cultural organisation. The 12 areas are:

  • Strategy and Governance
  • Programme
  • Places & Spaces
  • Collections
  • Talent & Sector Development
  • Fundraising & Development
  • Enterprise
  • Marketing & Communications
  • Research & Innovation
  • HR
  • IT
  • Finance & Operations

Choose which ones you want to focus on and skip the others – or answer every question if you want to be thorough!

Make the change

By getting a clear picture of where your organisation is at, you can identify where to focus your efforts and resources for developing skills, investing in technology and building partnerships.

You can set targets for where you’d like to be in 12 months’ time, and by returning to the Tracker and updating your answers you can measure your progress as you go.

By sharing status reports with colleagues online or downloading them, it’s easy to reflect on your work and progress in team meetings and workshops.

Here for everyone

Organisations of any size, and at any level of confidence in using digital technology, can make use of the Digital Culture Compass.

You choose what you assess yourself on, set your own targets and progress at your own pace.

There’s also a glossary over on the Compass, on hand to demystify any tricky tech terms that you’re not familiar with.
