Host

Kirsty Lang is an experienced journalist and broadcaster with a special interest in foreign affairs and the Arts. She is the chair of the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead and sits on the board of the British Council.

She spent many years as a foreign correspondent reporting for the BBC and the Sunday Times from Eastern Europe and later Paris. She’s been a presenter on Channel 4 News, BBC World, and Radio 4s daily arts programme Front Row.

She chaired the Orange Prize for Fiction, was a judge of the Independent Prize for Foreign Fiction in Translation and was also a visiting Professor in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University in New York.

Suzie Bailey is the Director of Organisational Development and Leadership at The Kings Fund. She is passionate about improving care through the development of people and cultures.

Before joining the Fund, Suzie was the director of leadership and quality improvement at NHS Improvement, where her work included the design and delivery of the first national framework for improvement and leadership development in England. Before taking up a national role at Monitor in 2014, Suzie worked in the NHS for more than 20 years in acute, community and mental health providers. Suzie is a Health Foundation Generation Q fellow and led the creation of the Sheffield Microsystem Coaching Academy in partnership with the Dartmouth Institute in Massachusetts, US.

Suzie acted as a critical friend to Arts Council England during the development and assessment of applications to its newly launched Transforming Leadership Fund.

Tony Heaton OBE is a practising sculptor and chair (and former CEO) of Shape Arts, which was recently awarded an Arts Council Transforming Leadership grant to deliver a leadership development programme equipping up to 50 future disabled leaders with the skills they need to succeed in their careers and drive change across the sector.

Tony is also consultant/advisor to many major cultural organisations – including The British Council, the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries and Tate – and the initiator of NDACA (the National Disability Arts Collection and Archive).

His sculpture, Gold Lamé, recently occupied The Liverpool Plinth and his ‘Monument to the Unintended Performer’ was installed on the Big 4 at the entrance to Channel 4 TV Centre in celebration of the 2012 Paralympics. His sculpture ‘Squarinthecircle?’ is situated outside the school of architecture, Portsmouth University.

He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, 2013 for services to the arts and the disability arts movement.  He has also received an Alumni Award from Lancaster University and honorary doctorates from both the University of Leicester and the new University Bucks.

Suzanne Alleyne is a Creative Strategist and Cultural Thinker. Collaborative working is at the heart of everything she does. She is driven by the belief that considering people, profit and purpose at all levels of business benefits both organisations and wider society.

Her business navigates the intersection of culture and commerce underpinned by 25 years of experience supporting and consulting for high profile international organisations and individuals. Her portfolio of clients includes Barclaycard, Channel 4, V&A, Wellcome Trust and Roundhouse. Within the arts she has an impressive track record working with UK writers and poets on their professional development and associated shows.

She is an inaugural Arts Council England Changemaker – a programme designed to increase the diversity of senior leadership in art and culture – through which she was Commercial, Brand and Strategy Director at Apples and Snakes. She is a Fellow of the RSA, a Cultural Animateur for Signifier, and a Visiting Research Associate and guest lecturer at King’s College London.
