Its publication is a moment that has been over two years in the making. During that time, we sought out the views of more than 6,000 people: artists, curators and librarians; leaders of cultural organisations; partners in government and in education; and members of the public from all over the country.

People spoke to us about the power that creativity and culture have in making them happy and in bringing people in their local area together. But we also heard that while talent is everywhere in this country, the opportunities to develop and explore it, are not. And while England already has one of the most innovative, collaborative and international cultural sectors in the world, there is undoubtedly more that can be done to ensure that everyone, everywhere, benefits from it and can be part of it.

In developing the strategy you have in front of you, therefore, we drew on everything we heard: the result is a vision for creativity and culture in England over the next ten years in which all of us can share, which builds on the achievements of the past, but looks to achieve more and reach further in the future.

We want the creativity of every person in every village, town and city, to be able to flourish; and for artists, arts organisations, museums and libraries to play an important part in every community - bringing people together, supporting local economies, and helping to improve lives.

Let’s Create is an invitation: to those who work in museums, libraries or arts organisations; to policy makers setting the agenda for creativity in health, education and beyond; to individual artists, practitioners and creatives; and most importantly, to every member of the public. We’re inviting everyone to join us in transforming England into a truly creative nation.

We’ve set out three Outcomes that we believe need to be achieved by 2030. Both Arts Council England and the organisations and people we invest in will need to change in order to achieve them – and we’ve established four Investment Principles that will help steer that change.

I believe in the vision of this Strategy. I believe in the power of artists, curators, librarians, arts organisations, museums and libraries to deliver it. I believe, above all else, that people who have creativity and culture in their lives are happier. We want to build a country in which every single one of us has the opportunity to benefit from creativity and culture.

It’s in this spirit of collaboration that we publish the Strategy, because now the real work begins. So, today I’m asking you to join us in coming together and creating new opportunities for every person in England to get creative and to flourish.

Together, let’s create better lives.
