Carolyn Hassan

Carolyn Hassan

Carolyn is founder and Director of the award-winning Knowle West Media Centre, located in one of the most deprived areas of Bristol. Initially trained as a photographer at the Polytechnic of Central London, Carolyn has a masters in photographic arts and social work. She spent six years working for Warwickshire County Council and Bristol City Council as a social worker working in child care and mental health services. Subsequently she worked in a wide range of community and education settings across the country, initiating and managing arts and media projects.

During 2008 Carolyn worked with Knowle West Media Centre lead artist Simon Poulter to commission a number of artists, and on the publication of Collapsing the Gap, a series of articles focusing on the increasingly complex area of culture and regeneration. In November 2009 the University of West of England awarded Carolyn an Honorary Doctor of Arts for her contribution to community cohesion, social justice and support for schools and colleges in the local community.
