Mapping of young people’s participatory theatre

What is it?
Paving the way is the first comprehensive mapping of the youth and participatory theatre sector. It provides a baseline assessment of youth and participatory theatre activity across England.

Paving the way summarises the findings of an extensive mapping study, regional mapping reports and case study research.

The report has been used by Arts Council England to inform the development of the Young People's Participatory Theatre project (YPPT).

Who commissioned it?
The report was commissioned by Arts Council England in partnership with the National Association of Youth Theatres (NAYT).

Who wrote it?
Alun Bond, Artservice, 2007

Artservice conducted the detailed analysis of over 600 questionnaires from the NAYT/Arts Council England national survey of youth and participatory theatre. Background analysis was provided by nine regional mapping reports, produced as part of the development of Arts Council England’s Children and Young People’s Strategies.

Visits were made to festivals and interviews conducted with young people, youth and participatory theatre directors and professionals. Nine case studies provide in-depth information.
