“London is one of earth’s great cultural melting pots: a clash of styles and people resulting in scenes, fashions, looks and sounds. The reason you should vote London the Most Musical City is about more than just bands and artists. We’ve also got orchestras, some of the world’s greatest music venues, a history of musical theatre and everything in-between from garage to grime emerging out of the city’s network of boroughs. But, let’s talk pop first… Swinging London was the epicentre of the sixties thanks to The Who, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and Cliff Richard. Chelsea’s King’s Road saw The Sex Pistols and Vivienne Westwood give birth to punk in 1976 while David Bowie was killing-off Ziggy Stardust at Hammersmith Palais and Pink Floyd were giving the world Prog-Rock. The Clash and The Jam remain an inspiration to this day helping give us bands such as The Libertines and Razorlight. Unfortunately, we don’t have room to list all of the more than 220 number ones produced by Londoners.
London, unlike some of our rivals for this title, is about more than just pop. The capital’s array of classical venues from the Festival Hall to Royal Opera House and Albert Hall are home to everything from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to the Last Night of the Proms, an international celebration of music which has spilt over into Hyde Park. Earls Court, Brixton Academy and Hammersmith Apollo are amongst the legendary venues catering to millions of music fans each year and they have now been re-joined by Wembley Stadium – home to probably the most famous concert ever: Live Aid.
With everything from street performers to pop stars, composers to opera singers – London is a city swimming in music and you should vote it the Most Musical.”

London is also a power house for jazz. From Polar Bear to Led Bib, from Toni Koffi to Lianne Caroll and and all bands in between. A veritable hub of activity with global potential.

Not a question of old and new bands, historically more music legends from London than any other British city. Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman - Rolling Stones, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townsend, Zak Starkey -The Who; Ginger Baker, Cream. Elton John, Dusty Springfield, Adam Faith, Dave Clark, Jimmy Page, Phil Collins, George Michael, Elaine Paige, Kate Nash, Coldplay formed in London. The names of some of the greatest and I could go on and Engelbert Humperdinck is from Madras, he was in his teens when he moved to Leicester. Nice that he supports one of his home towns now though. Need I say more....

Where else can I take my 8year old daughter to a family opera song workshop at the ENO (which she loved even though she had never been to an opera) and then experience the wonderful Bjork with the venue HO enabling a carer to come with me (supporting my needs as a disabled person)

We don't really have much in the way of music except in London and even that's a 45 minute drive from where I live but they do most of the radio stations we listen to there so I'd have to say London but when it comes to real live music though you really don't get much people doing any except for some really ameuteur rock and punk bands but that's about it really, so London is the MOST musical city. Without a doubt.

Ooh get you Ken! Well Lily and Wino certainly keep the London papers more interesting but the amount of unsigned acts and even quality buskers you get to see in London are fantastic and there are some great small venues too so London gets my vote for sure! Lala laah la laa doo do dooo etc.

I wonder who would win the international city one? Notice how this competition is all about OLD bands? where are the new Strokes? It's not the bloody Kooks or the 'wish you were smoking in the hospital ward' Editors is it? Bristol should win anyway. Just for its sheer diversity/perversity.

London, for one reason only, Madness.
Shame ther're not from Leeds. Manchester is a very close second.

London all the way baby. Manchester claims a musical heritage but gets beaten into a cocked hat by London's sheer variety. What other city can have spawned Madness AND Roachford?

Sorry, the northerners take this one. London obviously has lots going for it musically but Liverpool/Manchester definitely win.

London has great musical heritage similar to the rest of the UK. Personally I would say the Kinks truly are the best band from the capital to date... so many songs and easily comparable to the Beatles in th early years, lets not forget the Beatles had the immense production talents of classically trained George Martin.

Manchester and Liverpool obliterate London both in terms of quality and quantity !

London needs to build a case as THE world's musical city. Meanwhile - local london acts and loads of venues should see London through to being the musical city!
