Liverpool Header

Voting closes at MIDNIGHT tonight - Fri 30 May 2008 -
any votes cast after this deadline WILL NOT BE COUNTED!

Glam Rock, Punk, New Wave, New Romantics, Baggy, Britpop, Two step garage... British music has been defined by an ever evolving series of fashionable sounds which, more often than not, burn out and fade away. Only one scene has ever changed the world – Merseybeat.

The post-austerity Britain of the 60's is heralded as a golden age when skirts got shorter, love got free-er and the world danced to Britain's beat. At the centre of the world was Liverpool and four mop-topped Scousers who had emerged from the Cavern Club to change music for ever.

Yet, the reason why you should vote Liverpool the Most Musical City is about more than just John, Paul, George and Ringo. Yes, the Beatles are as famous today as when they split up almost 40 years ago, but there's much more to Liverpool's music scene which continues to consistently produce innovative artists who retain the intrinsic character of the city.

Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Searchers and Cilla Black all played a part in making the 60's swing before Liverpool artists cleverly avoided the decade that music forgot – the 70's. Instead Scouse tunesmiths retired to think again, emerging from Eric's Nightclub in the form of Echo and the Bunnymen, the Mighty Wah!, The Teardrop Explodes and to ruffle the feathers of Radio One with Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

The 1990's saw more perfect pop from The Farm, The Boo Radleys, Cast, Space and The La's whose 'There She Goes' remains a timeless classic and a must have for the soundtrack of any romantic comedy. With The Zutons, The Coral and Candie Payne as chart favourites, the Mersey Sound remains, ably supported by a classical music history with The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the oldest concert-giving organisations in the world, at its heart.

So, why should Liverpool get your vote? If not for a love of the Beatles, then why not for what they started – years of consistent, perfect pop, dripping in melody which is always evolving and yet is unmistakably Liverpudlian – the longest running 'scene' in British music.”

Do you agree? Have your say below...

Of course Liverpool is the best, but what an absolute travesty that the Merseysippi Jazz Band, now approaching its 7th decade, still containing some of the founder musicians, has not been included in this year's celebrations.

I was a student in Liverpool in the early 60,s and enjoyed folk evenings with The Spinners and singing in Liverpool Welsh Choral Union. I later taught in a city school and was impressed with the musicality of the pupils, singing in the playground, concerts at the Phil etc. Coming from Wales, I can unreservedly vote for Liverpool being the most musical city and still enjoy the musical culture there today

Yes I believe Livrpool has masses of musical and artistic talent.

with the many famous groups and singers, including the ones who have not made a name for themselves.

There is also the clubland scene such as cream which is now worldwide, the jazz scene and lots more artistic talent to say the least. Then there's the Phil, the theatres and much more, the list could go on.

People in Liverpool are not afraid to have a go and can laugh at themselves then go back and have a go again.

Britain provides the best music ,bands ,singers in the world.I think some cities do have the edge on others such as Sheffield on Leeds but I have to be biased & say that simply having the Beatles means Liverpool wins.No other band will ever be able to transcend so many age groups or have their music re mixed whether in pop, rock, classical, jazz, whatever your preference. Thanks to all the other merseyside muscians and hard luck Manchester, you have to concede this even with your great list of comparables.

Liverpool - no contest. Just sat in the bombed out church on a bale of straw and listened to samba bands, cuban band, 4 piece jazz trio - and there were loads of muso's in the audience too! Can't imagine anywhere else where music is so ingrained into the culture of a city or its people. Average age in audience today? 0-100yrs

Growing up watching the Beatles at the Casbah (if you didn't see the Beatles with Pete Best on the drums, you never saw the Beatles),I was into the same musical influences as the boys in the band, ie American Rock n Roll and R&B. Now that I've retired, I've made it my business to promote international R&B music at local venues. This is something that has been lacking in Liverpool for many years. If there is anybody out there who would like more information about our gigs, please call me on 0151 428 2855. We hope to keep our city at the top of the best musical cities in the UK.

The Liverpool Phil was a great Orchestra long before the Cavern opened as a great Jazz Club, pre Beatlemania!
David Crosby has already mentioned the Spinners but I must mention them again, plus Pete McGovern, writer of "In my Liverpool Home", and a driving force in the 60's local Folk revival.

Liverpool has always been a musical City and if I had my way it would win the vote by a long way. I am in my seventies now and even as a youth I used to go and listen to music in Liverpool, mainly in the Philharmonic Hall. It is awonderful experience especially at Christmas time.

It's no contest really is it? Musically Liverpool really does have plenty for everyone. We have been making music for the world stage here for many generations. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic is one of the oldest organisations of its kind in the world and with the orchestra playing better than ever it is convincing new and ever younger audiences that this kind of music not only still has its place but is the foundation on which so many other things can be built. With such solid footings in our history and such a vibrant and diverse musical scene, how could Liverpool fail to continue to generate new musicians, new music and new experiences to suit absolutely every taste?
Everyone who loves music of any kind needs to come straight to Liverpool as a matter of urgency to see and hear what we have on offer!

It was quite a place to someone from Heswall - for those not sharing Scouse blood loyalty. I knew nothing of their strange aggressive behaviour but dared sometimes go shopping getting the train through the Mersey Tunnel to Liverpool. My ears were being opened to a rough sound, I then in the late sixties, associated with what Mum called the ?common people?. I?d be shocked by their behaviour in the streets and Mum would say ?It?s not their fault. They don?t know any better,? and pull me away. But I was attracted to the roughness in the sounds. From ?Gear?, Grange Road, Birkenhead and in every boutique on Church Street, Liverpool, would blare out Motown - the Temptations or Holland Dozier compositions, such as Chris Clark earnestly singing Put Yourself In My Place, or Johnny Johnson and The Bandwagon singing Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache. My friends Sue and Suzanne made up a dance for their troupe. This was the Sixties, when Soul was good, before it became as trite and utilitarian as a kitchen towel. What came after in Liverpool music wise was a brilliant amalgam of what was coming in from abroad. Sue and I would have coffee in the Kardomah café on long shopping expeditions, between C. and A. and Lewis?s. Or my friends Nic and Arthur would squash me into their Morgan Noddy car, when we shopped for cheesecloth blouses, marked-down leather boots or identity bracelets at Paddy?s market. Rock and roll was suddently focussed on the North West of England - LIVERPOOL.

I totally agree with Accoustic Solo's comments. The range of music such as rock, blues, pop, jazz, classical, folk, hiphop etc that can be heard in Liverpool shows how music is embedded in the Liverpool identity. There used to be a music workshop in Upper Parliament Street called Stanley House. To my knowledge, no other city provided such.

There are future generations of scouse muscicians now babbling away whilst their mums dance around the kitchen with Radio City playing music we still enjoy and share together. We pass this pride and sense of fun to our children. Scousers have a FUN outlook and that translates into everything we do. That is why we are so successful and unforgettable!

Listen, do you want to know a secret? Well the secret is, Liverpool is the best city for music ever, just look at the bands and acts who originate from here, and especially the Beatles, the four lads who put it on the map, the revolution of music and every modern day band's role model. I salute you :]

Liverpool has been at the forefront of the music scene for many years. The 60s for me were the most exciting, the Cavern, the Iron Door even the Cubic in Birkenhead and not just the Beatles but the whole 'Merseybeat'. Liverpool though has such a wide variety of muscial talent and genres. The wonderful Philharmonic Hall continues to produce some excellent classical and popular music concerts, the Liverpool Empire with it's wide variety of Musical, Opera and Ballet performances never fails to enthrall. The sound heard on the 'Kop' on a Saturday afternoon is music to my ears! Not forgetting Echo Creamfields, Echo and the Bunnymen and many many more too numerous to mention. We now have the long awaited 'big' venue in the Echo Arena. So the city will continue to be at the forefront of the music scene for a long time to come. And long may it continue!

Liverpool has to be the winner. Throughout the 60's there were so many places for bands to play(and were paid) it was no surprise that Mersey Beat records flooded the charts. Many of these musicians continue to support Liverpool even today. This not restricted to pop music, look what classical music did for Paul McCartney and vice versa.
John Harvey

The Philharmonic orchestra are the best around and the concerts are well worth the money. Liverpool has many famous singers and groups: don't foreget ther Beatles started the group scene. John

I travel down to Liverpool from Edinburgh regularly just for the atmosphere of the city. A huge part of that atmosphere is the music that abounds in your city's pubs, clubs and theatres as well as the "pops" in the last few years. Back for Macca on Sunday. Love Liverpool, love her music and her soul.

Im not a native to Liverpool, and many of my favourite bands come from manchester - but Liverpool has produced some of the most influential music on the planet. Obviously the Beatles take the crown, but Elvis Costello, Shack, The Real People, Echo and the Bunnymen, Ian McNabb, Cast, The Las, The Coral, The Zutons all shaped the music music scene as we know it. Liverpool to win.

I was a teenager when the Beatles, Jerry and the Pacemakers, Billy Fury, etc were making a big influence on the teenagers of the 60's. I vaguely remember Freddy and the Dreamers, and Hermans Hermit's who were both Manchester based groups, but it has to be Liverpool which wins hands down for being the music capital

Liverpool comes up with such unique music, others copy but Liverpool brought it first - The Beatles (it took Manchester nearly 40 years to catch up with Oasis!) Also probably one of my most favourite and controversial bands comes from Liverpool - The KLF also known as The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, furthermore known as The JAMMs (just wish I'd have been there for the "Make Mine A 99" ice cream van stunt they did in Liverpool!) Liverpool is the Trancentral of top music!

Liverpool and music has defined the national and international sound for decades, encompassing the transatlantic influences off the ships from the states and other countries and in true Liverpolitan style sent it back with interest and have continued to do so. Music is in everything in liverpool, picking up an instrument is second nature and the past and present exports have continued the gospel of music according to Liverpool. You rock Liverpool!

I cannot put into words what the Beatles and their music have meant to me for most of my life. I recently visited Liverpool twice, the second time specifically to attend Paul's Ecce Cor Meum classical composition in the Anglican Cathedral and I have fallen in love with the city which is now my spiritual home. It is easy for me now to understand how so much greatness in every respect has come out of what is a simply wonderful place!

Liverpool's music scene today is just so colourful, vibrant, diverse and exciting. I'm involved in my music scene; my kids are involved in a completely different, but equally lively one (I've been dragged along and felt like a bit of a dinosaur, but hey, what fun). I'm so proud to be a tiny part of it all.

You can add Liverpool's very own 'Liverpool Male Voice Choir' to the list. It raises thousands of pounds for charity, performs all over the north west,is much better than 'The Fron'. It is performing over 20 concerts in and around Liverpool this year and celebrates its centenary in in 2011. Brilliant!

Our family age range is from 17 to 87 and in Liverpool there is a choice of music for all tastes. It would be truly great if the PR machine's version of the truth were even remotely plausible. Liverpool people are a musical people and have always been so. However the city has always treated indigenous musicians shabbily unless the have the stamp of approval of London or the other true centres of the music business. People and organisations, often from outside the city, have traded upon the indigenous talent that it almost resembles the exploitation of Africa for its natural resources. Liverpool is a musical city in a far more profound sense than is being recognised by institutions in the city which pay lip-service to its grass-roots, promoting pop cover bands like the Atomic Kitten while forgetting whole genres of music from Folk to Funk. My hometown,Liverpool has a great musicality in its soul but until it learns to conserve, promote and appreciate the music of its ordinary citizens it is not fit to shine the Mardi Gras beads of cities like New Orleans. Less of the hubris and more humility would go an long, long way in support of this initiative.

The Liverpool Phil under Petrenko provides exciting music-making of the highest quality, and the Rodewald Chamber concerts, with the most distinguihed and sensitive artists, has found an ideal home in the elegant grandeur of the St. George's Hall Concert Room. Alongside the vast array of professional concerts, there are many amateur ensembles of quality, such as the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra and the Metropolitan Cathedral orchestra and Cantata Choir.

For generations, seafarers brought music from the four corners of the globe, adding their many different influences into the melting pot of scouse! The Pool of Life is a pool of talent and creativity, and is known, not just throughout the UK, but throughout the world, as a true musical powerhouse. It is therefore the natural choice to represent the country as ?Music City?. Music is part of Liverpool?s very core, from the sea shanties and folk songs which are still sung today at family gatherings and in the city?s pubs and clubs, to the timeless lyrics of the immortal John Lennon. In the 50s, Billy Fury was Britain?s very own Elvis ? the first British rock and roll star. In the 60sThe Beatles were the first band to give British music to the world and it?s thanks to them that others could follow suit. But we must remember that the Beatles were a product of the vibrant Merseybeat music scene, long established before their arrival. And this scene produced countless other acts. Liverpool has always nurtured bands that dared to be different ? the controversial Frankie Goes to Hollywood which took the world by storm (?Frankie Says Relax?) and Dead or Alive (?You Spin Me Round?). The city?s list of bands is incredibly long and includes The Farm, the La?s, Cast, the Zutons, the Wombats and Space, to name but a few. In other musical genres, Sir Simon Rattle, one of the world?s most famous conductors and George Melly, a true great of blues and jazz both hail from the banks of the Mersey. The Cavern is arguably the most famous club in the world. Or perhaps it?s Cream, which began as a club night in Liverpool city centre and went on to conquer the world. Its innovative and unique sound became a true phenomenon and a music genre in itself. And in recognition of Liverpool?s position as one of the world?s musical capitals, where will the MTV Europe Music Awards be held this year? LIVERPOOL!!

I live on the Wirral, but I've loved Liverpool and its music scene since I was sixteen in the nineteen-sixties! In Liverpool, people can enjoy diverse music genres - performing artists (many homegrown!) representing all styles of music - supported by brilliant personalities - at great venues - at all times of the year! So many options, time doesn't allow me to attend everything I would like to. What greater musical experience could a city offer?

Indeed, the Liverpool Music scene didn't start with the Beatles, although I do remember slipping out in my lunch break from work,to the Cavern, when they had lunchtime music and seeing The Beatles, who were then an unknown band to me [this was 1962 and I was 16] My main memory of Liverpool music was the "Folk Scene" as it used to be known. This was when The Spinners were a very popular folk group and played regularly at The Phil. They were good friends of my husband and myself, and later we helped to keep their club going when they were too busy to come there every week. Later we were involved in running another folk club, the Levellers, and booking some of the top names in the folk world at the time, [late 80s, early 90s] I also remember Luciano Pavarotti appearing at The Phil early in his career. I think it was 1968. I moved away from Liiverpool in 1996 but come back regularly to concerts at The Phil and St George's Hall.Although I get extremely frustrated with the constant demolition and rebuilding, which is changing the face of the city, I hope when it's finished Liverpool will be even more vibrant than before. Just keep the familiar riverfront skyline please!

wherever you travel in the world mention liverpool and people immediately associate the city with its music. this isn't simply nostalgia - look at what's happening in the city now. Nor is it solely about 'headliners'- there is a grassroots music culture that is vibrant and encompasses all musical forms. Obviously Liverpool takes the number one spot.

I was a visitor to Liverpool in 1987. 21 years later I am still in Liverpool and a major reason for that is the excellent music that has carried on from the Beatles and can be heard in clubs, pubs and excellent venues such as the Royal Philharmonic. Liverpool is the winner for me.

It HAS to be Liverpool. Manchester might be good, but they have not had nearly as much success as we have! And Sheffield????? If you ask someone about Sheffield, they would say 'Oh, yeah. Isn't that were they make stainless steel?' Music would not come into the conversation! (Although they may have had a modicum of success somewhere down the line!) Liverpool has ALWAYS had a brilliant music scene - even long before the Beatles came about. I did a History of Popular Degree at L'pool uni BECAUSE of the music that has grown in this city - and it continues to grow even now. NO OTHER CITY CAN TOUCH US FOR MUSIC!
