Leicester Header

Voting closes at MIDNIGHT tonight - Fri 30 May 2008 -
any votes cast after this deadline WILL NOT BE COUNTED!

Born in India and named after a German composer, Engelbert Humperdinck says there can only be one winner…

“Leicester’s latest big names, Kasabian - with their swaggering style, hazy indie-rock sound and dazzling live performances, as well as The Young Knives from Ashby de la Zouch (surely a contender for Britain’s best place name) – can claim to be two of Britain’s most ‘now’ bands and the first reason why you should be clicking on the ‘Vote Leciester’ button. And there’s plenty more.

The city has gained a reputation for producing bands every decade who rise to the top of the charts on their own merits without ever being part of a short-term scene. One of the most memorable sounds of the 90’s was Cornershop’s groundbreaking fusion of Indian music, indie and electro dance - a mix which reflects the vibrant musical mix coming out of the city.

From the 60’s onwards I have enjoyed a career where I’ve been fortunate enough to sell 150 million units from Leicester to Los Angeles. And if you were thinking of voting for one of the North West’s nominees don’t forget that ‘Release Me’ kept a certain Strawberry Fields off number one…

So if you’re not yet convinced perhaps another chart-topper will do so - which city produced the first single by a solo a black male artist to top the UK singles chart? Leicester’s very own Mark ‘The Mack’ Morrison did so and later went on to become part of seminal US hip-hop label ‘Def Row’ alongside legendary names such as Snoop Dogg and 2Pac.

At the other end of the Leicester music scale is a band of 2 singers, 2 bassists and 2 drummers which has lasted 35 years and has the most unique name in British pop – party favourites Showaddywaddy have spent 209 weeks in the UK charts and will always be remembered for 70’s number one ‘Under the Moon’.

We’re proud of Leicester’s diversity as a city, and as you can see, home to a huge musical mix. We’ve always been a trailblazer for British Asian music, as well a thriving folk scene. The city also now hosts its very own festival - Summer Sundae a three day musical treat over five stages and hundreds of acts.

And perhaps this final piece of trivia will cement your vote…Leicester launched the first BBC local radio station on 8 November 1967 with the first local radio jingle. To show that your musical taste is different to the rest, vote Leicester!”

Do you agree? Have your say below...

Despite the numerous comments on here....Pineapster DOES NOT represent Leicesters music scene.
It's seen as a joke by everyone other that a core clique of people that live on the forums everyday!
Leicesters music scene survives perfectly well outside of Pineapster!!!

There is no contest as far as I'm concerned. I've been to Leicester & other cities in England. Leicester is the one on top. Hands down #1 and the greatest singing ambassador to the world that brought Leicester known around the world, talented Engelbert Humperdinck. Many many wonderful sights to behold in Leicester. GO Leicester GO!!!!!!!!!!

Over the years I have grown to appreciate very much the regular classical music concerts at Leiceter Museum which are invariably of a high quality. Also I applaud all the marvellous efforts in making the Leicester International Music Festival so successful

Leicester does have a rich and varied musical scene, including a fantastic international music festival which combines great musicianship with imaginative programme planning and a family atmosphere among performers and audience. There is a very fine amateur orchestra, the Bardi Ensemble and several very ambitious amateur chamber choirs.

Having moved to Leicester from California 15 years ago, I find it a haven for my bent in classical music. When I got married there, JoAnne Lunn, BBC Choir Girl of the year, sang at my wedding. She is now well-known as a soloist and gives back to singing in Leicester by serving as President of the Leicester Bach Choir, in which I sing. Leicester has also produced Paul McCreesh who started with the Leicestershire Chorale and is now world renoun with the Gabrieli Consort. Take note too of the many good venues for music: the lively Early Music Festival at St. Mary de Castro's and the Guildhall; the intimate Lunchtime concerts and summer music festival at the New Walk Museum; chamber music at Fraser Noble Hall; the Bardi and Philharmonic at the acoustically friendly DeMontfort Hall; and many fine amateur ensembles like the Kingfisher Chorale and Cecillian Singers. I've also enjoyed the diversity of world music and jazz on offer.

Born and raised in NY it's been Leicester that has attracted me to cross the pond and drive your roads at least 10 times now!! The Haymarket, the Clock Tower and ENGELBERT singing at DeMontfort!!! What better music has shown such longevity throughout these decades...the songs he made famous known to all. He is a legend and monument in the musical industry and can stand tall and proud as much as Leicester's famed Clock Tower! No doubt that's my vote!

No mention of classical music yet I see! What about Leicester's longstanding support of the Philharmonia Orchestra? What about the City and County's Arts in Education Service that still teaches over 6000 young musicians a week and provides numerous performance opportunities in bands and orchestras including the legendary Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra 60 years old this year? And what about the Leicester International Music Festival now considered to be one of the finest chamber music festivals in Europe featuring international stars like Nicholas Daniel and Natalie Clein? Are all these musical gems to be unsung?

Having grown up (mostly) in Leicestershire Iwant to highlight what a brilliant place it it is - and has been, for classical music. From the leadership of Eric Pinkett in the 1960's through to the bands and orchestras that help teach young and old today. Thank you.

Leicester has a splendid international (classical)music festival every year. It is currently directed by Nick Daniel, the world-class oboist. Other stunning artists like Natalie Clein and Imogen Cooper play regularly. We also have Sunday morning chamber music concerts organised by local viola player Graham Oppenheimer, where again we are treated to top-class players (such as Martin Roscoe) - and I recently discovered the brilliant (and gorgeous) Matthew Trusler (violin). Also - last but far from least - the Philharmonia Orchestra does a series of concerts every year and packs out the De Montfort Hall (a 'shoe box' shaped venue with excellent acoustics). There is nothing wrong with the inclusion of Leicester in this list!

What about Leicester's classical music scene? The International Music Festival in September, with Proms solo oboeist Nick Daniels as Artistic Director, features star recording artists like Natalie Clein, Charles Owen, and a roll call of others. Lunchtime concerts at New Walk Museum are of outstading quality,The Philharmonia are resident at De Montfort Hall, the Early Music Festival starts in a couple of weeks, and there isn't space to talk about other orchestras, choirs, schools etc. Leicester, the most musical city!

Don't forget the unsung hero's like Gaz Birtles and Tony Robinson..good enough to play with The Specials and Beautiful South - and when it comes to real quality what about people like Sally Barker, Mick Pini and Ainsley Lister - all appreciated for their brilliance much more in Europe than the UK... anyone remember the brilliant Farm Life and the Dirty Boppers from the early 80's?

Although the other towns have many singers that have been big here in the US,besides the Beatles, Ozzy (whom I love also) Duran Duran, The Rolling Stones and AC-DC Englelbert is my most favorite and although I have never heard of the others from Leicester I think because of Engelberts longevity in the business Leicester should win.

Dave Davies, you shameless self-publicist. Fudge broke no new ground but did it with enthusiasm and an easy charm. Even so, my vote goes to Diesel Park West, Misterlee, The Charmers and The Sinatras. Lots of great new local bands, around but too early to say they're truly great yet.

Leicester is already a name easily recognized around the world, due to the popularity of Engelbert Humperdinck, lovingly called a Son of Leicester. The story alone of how he battled his way up the ladder of success, earns Leicester a Gold Star, and Engelbert ~ many a Gold record....With all the various types of music by so many other worthy, talented performers, Leicester shines like a winner to me.....

April 23, 2008
The city is certainly starting to build some momentum in parts and from the point of view of the midlands, our City is the best. Like Sherrat has posted already, some good bands about on unsigned scene too. Personally however, my band The Carnabys, do take our influences from places such as Liverpool and Manchester and whilst their wealth of talent is clear to all cities, there is no shame in being behind such cities.

Somewhere in between Engelbert & Kasabian, we have forgotten two of the best UK indie/alternative bands of the late 80's & early 90's that both came out of Leicester. The fantastic Gaye Bykers on Acid and Crazyhead should be heralded as much as the aforementioned artists as musical icons for Leicester.
