SellaBand
1 Feb 2010
If you’re in a band but don’t have the money to fund the production of an album, merchandise or tour, you might want to check out SellaBand and get an army of fans helping out with the costs.
The Amsterdam based company SellaBand launched its platform for fan funded music back in 2006. Through their website at SellaBand.com artists can raise funds for their music projects with the help of their fans, enabling them to keep 100% of all their rights at all times. It certainly beats handing over control to a record label or distribution company.
If you’re just starting off as a band or artist, or even an established pro, you can start a SellaBand funding project for a new album, a tour or a promotion campaign. You just create a profile with songs, video etc, and music fans from all over the world can help to fund your projects by buying a so-called part in the project all in exchange for incentives. Once an artist has reached the target budget they then can start recording, go on tour or start the promotion, and the fans who've got parts get incentives from the artist like special edition CDs, free downloads, or tickets to the show, with even the possibility of getting a cut of the revenue made with the project.
Since 2006 more than $2,500,000 has been invested in artists and many bands have reached their targets and gone onto record in the studio. It’s all about control, with the artist getting to keep their independence.
Jazz trumpet sensation Abram Wilson who is signed to the Dune Music Company, has become the first major jazz artist to join with SellaBand. Abram is using the funds he collects to tour in support of his new album Life Paintings. With regular updates direct from the artist, fans can connect with Abram and get directly involved with helping promote his music. In return Abram is offering his 'Believers' the chance to receive a strictly limited edition signed live CD from the tour, music downloads and unreleased recordings, sound check passes, the Dune Music back-catalogue, and a personalised song written and performed by Abram.
SellaBand's Director of A&R Adam Sieff says: "Up until now jazz has kept a low profile on the site, but that could be all about to change with the arrival of truly world class musicians led by Abram. Their success will be yet more proof that the SellaBand community cares about all good music, whatever the genre may be."
Another artist to have featured on SellaBand is Ellie Williams:
Ellie Williams
