Check out the Cimbalom

1 Feb 2010

Have you perfected the piano, sussed the saxophone and already become a guitar hero? If so, and you’re looking for something a bit different, why not check out the cimbalom!

Although quite rare in this country, the cimbalom is more often found in countries such as Hungary, Poland, and Romania. A member of the dulcimer family of instruments, the cimbalom resembles the insides of a piano, and is played the same way as you would play a xylophone by striking the metal strings with small wooden hammers.

Audiences in Devon were recently treated to the sounds of a cimbalom at performances of High Muck-a-Muck, a new show from one of the Arts Council’s funded organisations ‘Theatre Alibi’. The show toured to theatres and schools across Devon.

Although somewhat of a rarity in this country, you may well have come across the sounds of a cimbalom without even realising it. The instrument has featured in the scores of a number of iconic films including Raiders of the Lost Ark and more recently in as Gollum’s theme tune in Peter Jackson's film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

If you want to hear what this rare instrument sounds like, check out this clip from Theatre Alibi’s recent production.
