Band On The Wall

4 Jan 2010

Iconic Manchester venue, Band on the Wall (BotW) aims to enrich people’s lives by enabling them to access, enjoy and participate in the best music of many cultures. The venue reopened after refurbishment in September 2009 as a new centre for the arts, continuing its legacy of presenting the best live music and a new learning and participation programme for people of all ages and abilities.

If you’re in the Manchester area and looking for somewhere to express your musical creativity, check out the range of programmes and courses that BotW has on offer for 2010.

Music Fusion - Inspiring young people to work across music genres and to experience a depth and breadth of musical activity. What’s special about this course is that it’s designed to develop key skills in writing, composing, instrumental and vocal skills and ultimately getting young people chatting with one another and working creatively. BotW operates a Saturday Morning Music Fusion which is a musicians’ collective of instrumentalists, singers and producers that cross genres and musical boundaries. An extremely dynamic concept which also sees artists in residence at BotW invited to inspire and develop writing composing skills with participants on the programme.

Build a Band - Covers the more technical aspects to music and is only available to NESTA funded schools. Young people who want to learn how to create, rehearse, record and produce, perform and promote their product are invited to do so using the venue’s extensive technical infrastructure and industry expertise; including the opportunity to film performances, record the music, mix and light the band and mix and edit the final product. Participants end up with their very own recorded product to take away.

Global Grooves - In partnership with Bangdrum Workshops brings the world’s rhythms to Manchester through drumming, percussion, and dance classes. All in a variety of styles from cultures around the world specialist tuition comes from resident and visiting percussionists from around the globe.

There's also the opportunity to study the technique, rhythms and 'bols' (rhythm vocalisation) specifically for South Asian Dhol. Learn several basic rhythms, put together arrangements using traditional grooves. It’s a course for all and no experience in Dhol drumming is necessary, though you’ll need intermediate level understanding of percussion.

Band on the Wall Improvisation Group - Jazz improvisation classes have always been a great way for musicians to express themselves. Led by North West Sax legend Munch Manship, players who join in can challenge themselves and boost their improvisation skills with this supportive and sociable group.
