Interview

Nancy Wallace will be known to many for her work with The Memory Band and more recently, The Owl Service. Her first solo release was the wonderful Young Hearts EP from 2005, a sublime collection of disco classics set to simple folk arrangements. Nancy released her debut solo album Old Stories to much critical acclaim earlier this year. The album has a charming simplicity and beauty, and unique interpretations of traditional British songs sit happily alongside Nancy's own compositions. We asked Nancy a few questions about making music.
How did you start singing and playing music?
My mum was a guitarist and singer so she had me started on the guitar when I was 5, and piano about the same time. I'm very lucky to come from a musical family so my sisters and I all started pretty early on.
When and how did you buy your first instrument?
There were always loads of instruments like guitars and banjos around the house, so the first thing I got that wasn't already part of the family was my first trombone when I was about 13. I saved up money from my Saturday job and mum and I went halves.
Do you play any instruments other than the guitar?
Odds & sods - I like to try anything that's thrown at me, with varying results. I'm persevering with the concertina though, that's my big love.
What has been your biggest musical achievement?
It has to be playing with Shirley Collins in the audience earlier this year, and then having her come up to me afterwards and say how much she enjoyed it. I LOVE her so it was a bit of a magic moment.
Who would you love to work with?
Sadly Shirley doesn't sing any more, otherwise it would have definitely been her. Apart from that, anyone with good ideas and no ego issues!
What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
Be nice to the sound person.
