In Harmony

2 Nov 2009

In Harmony is an exciting new project inspired by the hugely successful Venezuelan project El Sistema, which offers opportunities for children and young people to learn to play music. The project enables the children, some as young as four, to learn from experts in their field, with the end result that they are brought into full scale orchestras and encouraged to play in front of live audiences.

December 2008 saw the launch of three In Harmony projects; in Liverpool, London and Norwich. The projects are running in some of the city’s most deprived areas, and since they begun, hundreds of primary school children, teachers and families across the country have felt the benefit.

World renowned cellist and Chair of In Harmony, Julian Lloyd Webber, said about the programme:

"I have always believed that music should be available to all children - not just those whose parents can afford to buy instruments and pay for lessons. That is the beauty of this programme."

All three In Harmony groups are planning to get together next year to play together at a special concert. But in the meantime, each group is hoping to put on it’s own Christmas concert to showcase the best musicians from each school.
