Interview with Kieran Hebdan
2 Nov 2009
Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet, has been reshaping the world of electronic music since the nineties. His music is influenced by everything from jazz to folk, from world music to drum and bass. He's composed music for the latest James Bond film, and worked with the likes of Radiohead, legendary drummer Steve Reid and folk star Beth Orton. Signed to Domino records, Kieran's most recent release, Ringer, garnered great praise indeed. Hardly surprising as it shows his talent for creating pummelling dance music as well as beautifully fragile pieces, and making them seem completely natural together. We were lucky enough to catch some time with Kieran to ask a few questions..
How did you get started playing music?
I had some piano lessons when I was little but never got that into it. It was only when I got my first guitar for a birthday present when I was about 12 that I really got into playing music. I didn't have lessons... I just learnt with friends and from reading guitar magazines.
What’s been the most rewarding or exciting thing about playing?
I think when I first starting playing with other musicians. That felt so good when I was able to part of something that sounded alright.
Who are your musical heroes?
I like the people who are real innovators and change what people imagined music to be... like Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, and Rza.
What advice would you give to someone getting started?
Be open minded and practice a lot.
