If you’re intent on breaking into the world of music journalism, then Unsigned Band Review have got the opportunity for you. They offer help and advice to up and coming bands, and they’re teaming up with the organisers of the Music Journalism and PR awards to present an award for the Undiscovered Music Writer of the Year AND Undiscovered Music Photographer of the Year.
This year the judges are looking for a photographer and a writer who can capture the true spirit of one of the artists listed on Unsigned Band Review’s website. Your material will be judged by their press panel; Casper Llewelyn-Smith (Editor- The Observer Music Monthly), editors from NME, Clash, and more. This is your moment to impress the most influential music journalist panel in the country!
The winners of the award will get a commission, and and/or some work experience at a top music publication.
One of the judges of this years competition, and winner of music editor of the year in 2008, Caspar Llewelyn - Smith told us:
“Everyone should be able to read what you have written or see your photograph and really understand what you are trying to convey. Getting to know the band to some extent and getting to know what the band is all about, and having some empathy with that act is really important. With writers we are looking for people have a have a novel turn of phrase; we want to see the words leap off the page. Good luck!"
How the photographers enter:
- You must submit 3 different photos of any of the artists listed on UBR at a live event, studio, or portrait.
- If you know a band that is not signed up on UBR, please ask a member of the band to sign up as an UBR artist so that you can submit a photo of them.
- Please send low res images (max file size 300K) to ubrphotographer@unsignedbandreview.com
- Click here for the list of bands which are listed in alphabetical order http://www.unsignedbandreview.com/reviews_listing.php
How the writers enter:
- Write a review (150 – 200 words) of the latest UBR band - I Call Shotgun - who performed to a room full of press and music industry people at the most recent UBR event. View the footage here: www.unsignedbandreview.com
- Submit two pieces of published work along with the review
- Send your review, and evidence of the existing two pieces of published work, by email to ubrwriter@unsignedbandreview.com
- The review must be 150-200 words
The closing date for all entries is 8th November 2009, with the awards taking place in London on November 26th.
