She Keeps Bees
1 Oct 2009
This two piece from Brooklyn, New York have been touring Europe and the UK for the past few months, spreading their blues-rock message this side of the pond. The Guardian described their new album Nests as: ‘A loosely hammering, bluesy howl that sounds like it was as exciting to make as it is to listen to.’ Take it away is a big fan too, and was most pleased to get a few minutes with singer and guitarist Jessica Larrabee, and drummer Andy La Plant to ask them some questions.
How did you get started playing music?
Andy: I failed at piano lessons as a child, then picked up the guitar and bass at 13 and started the band Puking Jerks.
Jess: I was always singing and standing on my head trying to get someone to look at me. I started playing the drums at 14 then started the all grrrl band Kittie Litter.
When & how did you get your first instrument?
Andy: I went to the music store with Mom and got a bass and 10 watt amp.
Jess: My Dad was a drummer.. he let me use all his stuff.
What’s been the most rewarding or exciting thing about playing?
Andy & Jess: Meeting so many new and interesting people. Every night is a different beautiful experience. Touring is like paid vacation!
Who are your musical heroes?
Andy: Tom Waits
Jess: Robert Larrabee - my pops
What advice would you give to someone getting started?
Andy: Don't think about it too much.
Jess: Be patient with yourself and know that creativity comes in waves. Allow the energy to do the work for you.
She Keeps Bees will return to the UK early next year.
