David Thomas Broughton

3 Aug 2009

David Thomas Broughton is a Leeds-born, London-based musician who's steadily gaining praise for his unique brand of off-kilter folk. He's due to release his second, highly anticipated album, but it's his live performances which cause jaws to drop. Watching him improvise, using any stray objects (or people) that come to hand, it's clear that you don't need to be technically brilliant to be a creative musician.

How did you get started playing music?
My dad bought me a guitar, it's always been something filling my thoughts - melodies, lyrics - I guess it was just a matter of time before I started finding ways of expressing this outside of my own head.

What appealed to you about performing?
I guess the process of creating is more the appeal, but for it to be appreciated to the extent that people will offer me a space to perform is where it has moved into public performance. The performance element just opens up my experimentation and means of expression.

Do you play any instruments other than the guitar?
The world is a set of musical instruments and every inanimate object plays its part. I was never trained to play anything, so because I had the guitar that's what I practiced.

Who are your musical heroes / who would you love to play with?
Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits.

What advice would you give to someone starting out?
Don't listen to reason if you enjoy it!

David plays on:

7 August 2009 at the Hare and Hound in Birmingham

15 August 2009 at Summer Sundae in Leicester

24 September 2009 at the ICA in London
