24 Fragments

2 Feb 2009

The Fragmented Orchestra is the ingenious project that won the PRS Foundation’s New Music Award last year, and this month sees a series of 24 events take place at 24 locations around the UK.

The Fragmented Orchestra works by 24 ‘neuron units' being placed across the UK in specially chosen locations, including a football stadium, cathedral, dairy farm, school playground and a field. As each of the ‘neurons' are stimulated by sound, created by both the public and the elements, they will select audio fragments to be streamed across an invisible network or cortex created between them. The cortex will form a living instrument, which interprets the fragments of sound as music.

The events taking place include a live show from musician Edwyn Collins at a London school, to a science talk at Kielder Observatory in Northumberland, to a performance from chamber group Cortical Songs, at Liverpool’s Goodison Park football ground.

All the events are free to the public, so whether you’re interested in being part of an innovative science experiment, or you just want to see what it’s all about, there’s an event for you.
