Own Art
Since it’s launch in July, Take it away has enabled more than a thousand people to buy their own instrument and pursue their interest in music. Perhaps a lesser known fact is that Take it away is modelled on the Own Art scheme, also run by Arts Council England, which was launched in 2004.

Own Art is designed to make it easy and affordable for everyone to buy contemporary works of art and craft including paintings, photography, sculpture, glassware and furniture. It works in exactly the same way as Take it away, and can be used in over 250 galleries across England.

If you haven’t visited an art gallery before, walking into one can be a bit daunting. And chances are that if you’re a bit nervous about visiting a gallery, you’re probably not even considering the possibility of actually buying anything. The people behind Own Art feel strongly that everybody should feel comfortable visiting galleries, and by making original artworks financially attainable, hopefully some of those barriers can be removed.

Lizzie Newell from Own Art, said: ‘I’m aware that there are lots of people who don’t feel comfortable visiting galleries, and some galleries can feel rather exclusive and uninviting. I come from an arts background and I have experienced that myself. If people know that Own Art is about making art more affordable, they might feel happier about visiting the galleries offering the scheme. And eventually they may become more comfortable visiting galleries in general.’

And for those more seasoned art lovers, Own Art offers the opportunity to walk away from your favourite gallery with an original work of art. As Lizzie says: ‘Art can be very expensive. Own art enables people who wouldn’t ordinarily be able to afford it, to buy an artwork they love with a loan ranging between £100 to £2000. The loan can also be used as part payment for something priced higher than £2000.’
