Need a music teacher?
For anyone who has bought an instrument and then wondered how to go about finding a good, reputable teacher, the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) is a fantastic resource.

You might know of the ISM as the UK’s professional body for musicians. The core aim of their work is to promote music and protect the interests of musicians by raising professional standards, providing legal advice and other benefits to its members, who include performers, teachers, composers, conductors, organists and writers, among others.

As the ISM’s Marketing and Development Manager Danny Whatmough told us ‘We offer our members a wide range of benefits that support them in their work as professional musicians. These range from insurance and legal advice to seminars and regional events. We also have registers of specialists that members can elect to join.’

The ISM’s work reaches beyond supporting musicians however. It publishes the Register of Professional Private Music Teachers, which is updated weekly.  This is the only regulated online list of its kind in the UK, providing a unique service for anyone looking for a private instrumental or vocal teacher.  The register is a comprehensive directory of teachers, offering a guarantee of professional status through membership of the ISM.  All teachers listed in the register have gone through a stringent vetting process to demonstrate their professional credentials and experience in the teaching they offer. In addition, all applicants must provide references and pass a CRB Disclosure check.

The register is published on the Society’s website and is updated weekly. You can use the search facility to find teachers in your area, relevant contact details, and guidelines on specialisms.  Teachers are listed in the register by instrument and by area, with their specialisms indicated (eg, adult beginners; foreign language coaching for singers; pupils with learning difficulties).

To find a music teacher, search the ISM register online at www.ism.org/musicteacher
Alternatively, the ISM register can also be found in many local music shops and all main music libraries.
