Study for a degree in Indian Music The four year course, which is validated by the University of Westminster and has Pandit Ravi Shankar as patron, began in September 2006 and is based at the Bhavan’s site in West London. Within the specialisms of Hindustani and Karnatic Music, students can hone their instrumental and vocal techniques, and develop their musical performance and theory skills. As any aspiring or professional musician knows, it can be invaluable to develop skills that complement your musical ability. The Bhavan recognises this, and as a result in addition to performance, teaching, improvisation and composition, business skills and leadership are included in the syllabus. Dominika Sulinska from the Bhavan said: ‘As a part of our complementary studies we offer a Professional Skills Project, in which students may develop transferable personal skills such as leadership, teamwork, organisation and communication as well as entrepreneurship and the ability to generate new opportunities. Nowadays professional musicians need to be aware of these basic skills’ One to one teaching is at the heart of the performance study, and the course is delivered by the Bhavan’s team of gifted teachers and enhanced by some of the top teachers and artists from India itself. Students can take advantage of the resources at the Bhavan, which include rehearsal studios, a concert hall, library and archive. Students also have access to Trinity College of Music’s Jerwood Library.
