NUMU Much like MySpace, NUMU is a website enabling young people to showcase their music, meet others and learn new skills. Unlike MySpace however, it’s a dedicated safe space only open to students and schools, designed to support the Music Curriculum in primary and secondary schools, and founded on extensive consultations and trials with teachers, students and music services. The site has been developed through Musical Futures, a two-year action research project exploring imaginative ways of engaging 11-19 year-olds in musical activities. It provides an exciting and safe space for young musicians whilst also delivering quality learning opportunities at primary and secondary levels, across subjects. Striking a balance between student ownership and teaching requirements can be difficult, but NUMU has gone some way to finding this balance. Each student has their own web page where they can publish music, write blogs and receive feedback from the NUMU community. Yet teachers have complete moderation control over their students’ online portfolios and can create online project pages to share resources and support activities.
