Musicability
Ever wondered what’s lurking in your loft? Along with a group of parents in the Garforth area of Leeds, Rebecca Brayson launched Musicability with the ‘Look in Your Loft’ drive encouraging people to donate unwanted instruments, which were repaired and then lent to anyone with an interest in playing music, from students to their mums, dads, or grandparents.

The response was positive. As Rebecca says: ‘We were completely surprised by the number of violins, cornets, trumpets, clarinets, saxophones, music stands, electric pianos & guitars that came our way’

Since launching, Musicability has obtained sponsorship from local businesses, which helps with sourcing bigger, more costly instruments. Thanks to sponsorship from a local dentist they’ve been able to buy a bass clarinet. And they’re now on their way to buying a set of instruments for a local primary school, helping the pupils to get involved with learning music and giving them the opportunity to study at Garforth Community College.

In the long run Rebecca and co hope that Musicability will make participation in music more accessible to people of all ages in Garforth, whether that participation is playing an instrument, or going to one of the regular performances that will be put on for the community.
