Double celebration as two new arts spaces open in the East in one week
The East of England saw the launch of two major new additions to its cultural map in May with the official opening of the UK Centre for Carnival Arts (UKCCA) in Luton and a housewarming weekend for Aldeburgh Music’s new Hoffmann Building at Snape Maltings near Aldeburgh, Suffolk.
Britten Sinfonia wins national award
Britten Sinfonia has won a prestigious award from the Royal Philharmonic Society, regarded as the highest recognition for live classical music making in the United Kingdom. The Chamber Music award, which was presented at a ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel in London on 12 May, was given in recognition of the Britten Sinfonia at Lunch series.
On the PULSE 09: Ipswich Fringe Festival
The PULSE Fringe Festival 09, a multi-disciplinary performing arts festival curated and produced by the New Wolsey Theatre, took place at Ipswich venues from 29 May to 13 June. This year's line-up included an international presence for the first time, featuring Canadian dancer/choreographer Mélanie Demer's work Les Angles Morts and Dutch performance artist Neel de Jong's exploration of womanhood in Driven.
DanceEast’s Spectacular Dancing Tent tours the East of England
DanceEast’s Spiegeltent is a innovative mobile arts venue that will be hosting dance performances, classes and workshops for audiences across the East of England this summer, creating a variety of opportunities for people to engage with dance. The Spectacular Dancing Tent tour starts on 27 June at Christchurch Park in Ipswich.
Escalator East to Edinburgh 09 line-up announced
A diverse and exciting line-up for this year’s Escalator East to Edinburgh has just been announced, bringing a wealth of talent from the East of England to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 7 to 31 August. Now in its seventh year, the initiative has developed an unrivalled reputation for quality and innovation.
CAN 09: a summer of contemporary visual arts
Summer 2009 will see Contemporary Art Norwich 2009 bring together emerging and established artists in its celebration of contemporary visual art. CAN09, which launches on 11 July with the highly acclaimed Eastinternational2009, runs until 31 August bringing over 100 artists from around the world to Norwich.
Arts Council England announces restructure to save £6.5 million a year
Arts Council England has announced plans for an organisation-wide restructure that will save £6.5 million a year in administration costs; producing savings that will be invested in the arts.
