15 March 2010 - Go back to Own Art March Bulletin

Every year, the changing panel, made up of artists, writers and curators select artists’ work from the membership. Now in its seventh edition, the exhibition has developed a reputation for spotting emerging talent and bringing it to a wider audience.

This year’s show includes 25 artists based throughout the United Kingdom and internationally. A diversity of approaches to art making is evident ranging from video and film to painting, drawing and sculpture.

The selectors (Jennifer Higgie - writer, critic and co-editor of frieze and artist Rebecca Warren) were drawn to work that had "a strong and unique voice". Within the show there is most definitely a sense of the artists "doing their own thing" and perhaps a rejection of what can be seen as "fashionable or en trend".

This show is an excellent opportunity to see examples of the very best art making today and invest in something unique. Works start from £200 and works are available to purchase using the Own Art scheme - check out the exhibition if you can!

Arts Council England launched a consultation on future priorities for the arts on 19 January 2010 – Achieving great art for everyone. The consultation process builds on our previous work to define how we will work with artists and arts organisations to create positive change for the arts over the next 10 years.

John Holden, a cultural commentator, told us what he thinks about the priorities Arts Council England proposes.

‘You can’t accuse the title of this document of being unambitious: great art; a decade’s worth; excellence; for everyone. Leaving aside all the usual definitional problems about what’s good or bad and what constitutes art, it’s a tall order, with some big implications’.

Following the tremendous success of the Invest in Art seminar last June, Visual invite readers of the Own Art bulletin to their next event at The International 3 gallery in Manchester. During the evening you'll have the chance to learn about the Visual service and have the opportunity to hear from the gallery owners, a North West collector and the artists themselves.

The International 3 is an exhibition and project space run by directors Paulette Terry Brien and Laurence Lane that has developed out of the Manchester's artist-led activity. They produce a year round programme of commissions, exhibitions and events.

Brass Art is the collective name for artists Chara Lewis, Kristin Mojsiewicz and Anneké Pettican. For the exhibition at The International 3 they have unlocked the Entomology collection at The Manchester Museum to develop a new series of watercolour drawings.

Catharine Braithwaite is a freelance Arts Marketing Consultant and been involved with artists, galleries and curators for the past 18 years. She has worked on everything from the launch of Tate Modern to Liverpool Biennial and will be speaking at the event.

At Home is the first in a new series of exhibitions at ROLLO Contemporary Art, which invites private collectors to show new works by artists from their collections in the gallery space.

This show focuses on women artists whose works explore ideas of femininity and domesticity, from the ROLLO Art/Philippa Found collection. Own Art caught up with Gallery Director and owner of the collection, Philippa Found, to find out more.

15 March 2010 - Go back to Own Art March Bulletin

Who can we expect to see in this exhibition?

Exhibiting artists from the collection include: Sculptress Karla Black, whose site specific floor and hanging sculptures created from make up and domestic materials were recently shown at Modern Art Oxford; Photographer’s Paula Rae Gibson - whose one-off chemically distressed photographic images explore desire - and Agatha A. Nitecka – who’s unique large format instant colour prints explore intimacy and absence in haunting images of the body in the domestic; young British painter Sarah Lederman whose drippy paintings of adolescent nudes won her the Catlin Painting Prize 2009, and Michelle Souter, whose intricate ink on paper drawings explore psychological trauma’s and childhood memories.

Gallery artists Angela Reilly’s paintings and Natalie Gale’s mixed media works complete the seven artists included in At Home.

The At Home exhibition features some beautiful examples from your collection. What made you decide to focus on acquiring works by women artists?

Collecting work specifically by women artists wasn’t a conscious decision. However, I think there is some logic in it. The works in my collection by women artists largely deal with issues of femininity, and so as a women, I empathise with the things these women artists are articulating. An artwork commenting on masculinity might not move me so much as I cant relate to it, but with the works in my collection I feel a strong empathy to the emotion and issues these artists are expressing. Also, when I was a student of art history I specialised in feminism and women’s art from 1960s, and I believe that this has very much informed my taste.

What is the most exciting piece of work you have personally invested in and why?

Without a doubt Tracey Emin’s The Last Thing I Said to You Is Don’t Leave Me Here, 1, 2000, Epson print 1/6. Ever since I first saw this work in the press in 2000, and then in the National Portrait Gallery, I was totally moved by it. It’s my favourite piece of art. When I was a student at art school and later studying art history I would refer to this work a lot. I was recently going through old sketchbooks of university work and I found that continually the postcard of this work appears. Now I have the real thing. Its incredible and such a privilege to live with this work.

Do you have any tips for developing an art collection?

Yes! Know what you like and buy what you can’t live without. Immerse yourself in art history; view, understand and appreciate contemporary art; read and learn as much as you can.

Then speak to gallerists; tell them what you do and don’t like. Get to know a gallerist that understands your taste and they will alert you to new works that are coming up by artists they think you will like, or will develop your collection. Use their expertise. Working with collectors at ROLLO in this way is one of my favourite aspects of working in the gallery. I love it when you click with a client’s vision, and a new work comes into the gallery, and you know exactly who to call.

Also, don’t be put off by the false belief that only the super rich can build a great art collection; if you have a coherent vision you don’t need lots of money and there are great works by emerging artists which are affordable. Once you have done some research, trust your instincts with lesser known artists.

There are also great schemes – the Own Art scheme – that can make investing in art much more accessible. Getting an interest free loan of up to £2000 is a big help to building any collection. Not all galleries are part of the scheme but where you find a gallery who is a member, you should certainly make the most of the offer. When I first started collecting art I didn’t have a large amount of disposable income by any means, but I made collecting a priority. When a work of art you love comes along you have to take the opportunity to invest in it while it's still available.

Can you tell us which other collectors are planning to show new works by artists from their collections in the gallery space this year?

At the moment I am in discussion with a couple of collectors, however until it’s all confirmed I can’t reveal anything.

Ideally we would like to do 1 or 2 exhibitions a year where we work with collectors to pull together themes from their collections and show this in the gallery space as part of our ROLLO programme which is very much focused on thematic group shows.

A lot of collectors don’t realise they have a line of focus in their collection, yet as an outsider you can see their incredibly clear vision – and so I’m looking forward to that role of interpretation. The idea is that we would select some artists from their collection but also show new works by these artists. This way the artists have the opportunity to show new work, but in a totally different context to how they might normally be exhibited.

As a curator, I think the context of a collection is a very interesting position for an artists work to be placed and exhibited within; putting one artist with another purely because they are owned by the same person might create new dialogues in the artist’s work that the artist didn’t primarily intend, yet are valid and are born from being juxtaposed with the collector’s other works.

I think the At Home series will be an exciting one; as a curator, to create something which has initially been shaped by someone else’s vision - as an artist, seeing who their work has ended up with and what new meanings this might bring to their work - and for the collector, to see their vision reinterpreted by the curator.

We are using At Home as a pilot, and inviting any collectors who are interested in seeing their collections re-presented to approach us with details of their collections, the artists who are included and to tell us if they believe there is any theme within the collection.

Prices of exhibited works range from £470 to £12,000 and are available to purchase using the Own Art scheme.

15 January 2010 - Go back to Own Art January Bulletin

Supporting and developing personal collecting continues to be a significant part of Arts Council of Wales’s strategy to support artists and make the opportunity to purchase art and craftwork ever more accessible.

By visiting one of the 80 galleries across Wales, participating in Collectorplan, you can use up to £2000 credit to purchase an original work of art.

What can you buy?

As with Arts Council England’s Own Art scheme, as long as the work is by a living artist and purchased from one of the Collectorplan Galleries in Wales, the world’s your oyster! Buy anything from glass and ceramics to artists’ film and video and more.

There are a few differences between Collectorplan and Own Art, so if you wish to use the scheme in Wales take a note of the following:

Interest-free* credit starts at £50 and runs to a maximum loan of £2,000

10% deposit is required upfront but the repayment period is the same as with Own Art at 10 months for loans of £1000. Loans for up to £2000 can be repaid over a period of 15 months.

You can buy multiple works of art from multiple galleries up to the maximum £2,000 credit facility threshold

Loans are available to UK residents aged 18 or over with a bank or building society account capable of operating direct debits. A Collectorplan loan is normally approved in 7-10 days

Over 80 galleries throughout Wales offer the scheme. For a list please visit the website.

What was the idea behind Mermaid and Monster?

Mermaid and Monster was born on New Years Day 2007. With regional cities across the UK all having at least one commercial outlet for contemporary art at art fairs, it seemed perverse that Wales didn’t have one.

How has Mermaid and Monster evolved?

Mermaid and Monster didn’t want to grow gradually from artist-run gallery (although we are both artists) to attending art fairs, it wanted to launch at an art fair almost unannounced. So that's what it did.

We managed to get private funding rather quickly, launched the website and approached a fine roster of artists. Whilst we never intended to be exclusively Wales-based, the majority of our artists were. That was more happy accident but mainly because, well, they were good artists. Mermaid and Monster curated, attended art fairs, advised on art for offices, produced Limited Editions and pushed the careers of artists we liked.

That year we attended the Year 07 Art Fair in London, amongst an impressive line up of rather more experienced galleries from the USA and Europe. The learning curve was very steep, but worth it. Sales were better than expected for our first public airing and we came away buoyant, if rather exhausted.

The following month we came back to Wales at the invite of g39 gallery, and curated the show Loners’ Island, which included two of our roster plus 4 other artists from across the UK. We were then invited by the Contemporary Art Society to curate a show for their new London offices, showcasing regional organisations as part of their excellent rotate programme. Again, the critical reception and sales were good.

Has the current economic climate affected your work?

Opportunities were few in 2009, and cash too tight to attend an art fair. Mermaid and Monster was always a flexible, non-gallery based contemporary agency, run by two people who had other jobs and careers as artists. Whilst a gallery based organisation may be a plan for the future, Mermaid and Monster needs to remain flexible and develop constantly. For 2010, this will involve blending in some of our other projects such as public art commissioning.

Mermaid and Monster is an ever evolving beast, reacting and being proactive in promoting artists works and projects.

Gordon Dalton is an artist and curator and co-Director of Mermaid and Monster. He currently works at Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea as Learning Officer; recently curated and managed a commission by Olaf Breuning for St Pauls Park, Bristol for Bristol City Council. www.gordondalton.co.uk

Nestled against the stunning backdrop of the Clwydian Hills in North Wales, the centre was the recent recipient of a £3.15 million investment from the Arts Council of Wales' Capital Lottery Funding stream - the largest grant of its kind made to North Wales.

As a result, the bespoke Gallery now consists of three galleries - two for displaying the best contemporary craft from Wales and around the world, the other a collections gallery and a retail gallery space. There are also studios for artists, educational and residency facilities, a café and a tourist information cultural gateway.

Ruthin Craft Centre has already won the Dewi-Prys Thomas Prize 2009, which recognises the importance of good design to the quality of life, identity and regeneration of Wales and reached the final shortlist for the Arts Fund Prize earlier this year.

In January 2010 you can see Sculpture to Wear - the first major exhibition in the UK of the work of the exceptional American jewellery artist Marjorie Schick. It’s a rare overview of this important artist’s boundary-crossing work from the late 1960s to the present.

Collectorplan can be used to buy items from the Contemporary Objects for Interiors exhibition which can also be seen at the Craft Centre in January 2010. This is a showcase of contemporary craft for the interior and it introduces a range of makers working in furniture, textiles, surface pattern, glass and lighting. Curated as a room set, eleven makers show exquisite handmade objects in a domestic setting.

g39 is the leading artist-led organisation for contemporary art in Wales. Part gallery, part community and part resource, it is a welcoming space for audiences. Despite its small size the public gallery has become a highly respected part of the UK artist-led scene and a direct line for audiences to access Cardiff’s cultural scene. The organisation sees its role as a ‘bridge’ between the artist and the public, and a key component of the curatorial rationale is bringing contemporary work to new audiences.

From the outset g39 has commissioned and presented innovative and challenging contemporary work. Its activity is widely acknowledged as a crucial element in the cultural networks of Wales and the rest of the UK and is highly acclaimed.

The space now has an ongoing exhibition programme and also produces artists’ publications, offsite projects across the city, and other activities. Many artists who have previously shown here have gone on to win major prizes and awards including Bedwyr Williams, Nadia Hebson, Simon Blackmore and Tony Hall.

Now in its 25th year, the Turner Prize is arguably the world's most recognised and prestigious award for contemporary art.

The prize is awarded to an artist under fifty, born, living or working in Britain, for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation in the twelve months before 6 May 2009. Four artists are shortlisted and they present works in a show normally held at Tate Britain before the winner is announced in December.

Winner, Richard Wright as well as Enrico David, Roger Hiorns and Lucy Skaer are all included in this year’s show. Visit the website for more information.

There is still time to visit Roger Hiorns' Turner Prize nominated SEIZURE in south London. 75,000 litres of copper sulphate create a beautiful and somewhat menacing crystalline growth throughout this abandoned dwelling.

Admission is free and Christmas/ New Year opening hours are as follows:

Until 20 December: Thurs-Sun, 11am-5pm, 27–31 December & 2-3 January, 11am-5pm

15 December 2009 - Go back to Own Art December Bulletin

Visitors can browse and purchase original gifts by over 60 makers chosen for affordability and functionality.

Because the emphasis at the Guild is not only hand-made but ‘contemporary’ craft, Wrapped Up features work using innovative design ideas: Daniel Kavanagh is this year’s Craft & Design ‘Best Newcomer’ whose pots fuse metal onto ceramic surfaces. The ’veiled jewellery’ of Yoko Izawa is named aptly from her interest in ’wrapping’. She combines lycra, metal and traditional Japanese techniques of knitting and dying. Her rings and bracelets evoke the fragility of shells and stone with vibrant frosted hues.

To buy such original, contemporary craft supports emerging businesses from the South West, such as Devon-based Hamble and Jemima (fantastic bags from recycled material) and Janine Partington, an increasingly collectible enameller from Bristol.

Wrapped Up is already showing proof of successful exhibition sales which is great news for the Guild and for the craftspeople it showcases. Director, Erica Steer says: ‘This really proves the value of investing in hand-made work by craftspeople committed to making in small studios with specialist tools and individual skills.’

15 December 2009 - Go back to Own Art December Bulletin

The current show features artists, Paul and Kate Kessling. They both work at the Oxfordshire home they share with their three daughters, two dogs, eight hamsters, ten silkies, three ducks and a cat and five hives of bees! Amazingly, for the most part, living and working together creates a space in which they can both succeed as artists.

On the couple at home, Katie Newman, Director of the Gallery and curator of the show, says:

'If its Kate you want, head for the loud music. If you pause for a few moments, you’ll realise that it’s the same track on repeat, again and again. This year, the chances are it will be The Dandy Warhols’ Bohemian Like You. It’s already clocked up 900 plays on her iPod since January.

Paul will most likely be keeping company with John le Carre's audio book back catalogue, probably in front of his new Italian studio easel, working in oils.

On the other hand, you might not be able find Paul at all. He might have hopped into his Land Rover and headed off to the Ridgeway where he goes when everything else gets too much. Saying that, its also a place which has been the source of great inspiration and where he has committed to paper so many of his distinctive landscapes'.

Paul Kessling, Folly Field, ink on paper, 17.5 x 63cm

Whilst working in the same space has its practical difficulties, it also has huge compensations and being able to talk is undoubtedly one of them. The couple think nothing of debating an exact shade of black for hours, and they are blessed in that their styles and influences differ so greatly that they can talk about each other’s work without fear that their ideas may overlap.

Paul's style has been developing for almost twenty years whilst Kate radically reinvents her approach to her art every two to three years. Paul is, by nature, intellectual and meticulous whilst Kate’s approach is more serendipitous.

There are other differences too. Paul can produce large splashy abstracts using colossal brushes and a vast amount of colours but leave no mess. When Kate uses paint, it goes everywhere, including the floor, the children and the pets!

The exhibition, Kessling VS Kessling 2009, continues until 28 January 2010 and the gallery is open Wednesday - Saturday, 10 am - 6pm, and by appointment at other times.

The exhibition reflects the impact of the climate change debate on the practice of a broad range of contemporary artists. Its place and resonance with their practice is demonstrated throughout the show, interconnecting ‘issue’ and ‘art’ in beautiful, powerful and thought-provoking ways.

Highlights include works by Mona Hatoum and Marcos Lutyens, just two of the artists seeking to encourage a deeper consideration of our cultural relationship to earth’s stability.

The role of the artist in the cycle of our evolution is central to the exhibition and in the final section, the visitor will see works which present a world of vision and hope by the likes of Tracey Emin, the writer Ian McEwan and Mariele Neudecker.

Just one of the treats as part of the exhibition, Factory Outlet, is in Upper Gallery 1. Here, one can marvel at the largest and most complex painting Bob and Roberta Smith have made to date. In the work, This Artist is Deeply Dangerous, the richly painted signage, with which the artist has become identified in recent years, moves to a new level. The 9 panels, each 130 x 120 x 5 cm, take inspiration from sports journalist Steve Bierley’s remarkable article on the artist Louise Bourgeois.

On the work, Bob says:
"The work could be called 'One Song to the Tune of another' - let me explain - last summer, the Guardian sent its Art's writers to review sports events and its sports writers to review Art events. Among the results was this amazingly frank analysis of the differences between art and sport by tennis correspondent Steve Bierley."

An exclusive, limited edition Sugarlift etching made for Factory Outlet on the occasion of this exhibition is available for sale and an Own Art loan can be used to spread the cost of the purchase. This is the first ever etching by Bob and Roberta Smith and it is unusually large for a print of this type. Each hand-printed work on 100% cotton Somerset 300gsm deckle-edged paper is pencil signed by the artist and is in a limited edition of only 100.

The print is for sale at the pre-publication price of £175, rising to £250 at the end of the exhibition period. Please visit Beaconsfield editions for more details.

All works in Bob and Roberta Smith's Factory Outlet are for sale courtesy of the artist, Beaconsfield and Hales Gallery.

This project is the first in the Beaconsfield series Phase, which turns the spotlight on mid-career artists with whom the organisation has had a significant past relationship.

Own Art

Tuesday 1 December
BBC One, 10.35pm

This autumn, BBC One’s flagship arts documentary series, Imagine.. focuses on the Own Art scheme and uncovers a variety of people who are part of a small revolution in the art world.

15 November 2009 - Go back to Own Art November Bulletin

The programme demonstrates that with Own Art you no longer need to be fabulously wealthy to afford to hang a Blake, a Banksy or a Hockney over your fireplace.
Imagine uncovers a variety of people who have all used the Own Art scheme - a pig farmer, a factory worker and a policeman are just some of those who tell how they came to appreciate art, how they chose their pieces and what they mean to them. Many grew up with no art on the walls at all, yet some have developed a passion that borders on addiction.

Some are first time buyers and others have amassed large collections that cover every inch of wall space. They have bought an enormous variety of artworks by well established figures and emerging young artists, and although investment isn't on the agenda, a few have been surprised to see their pieces shoot up in value.

The film features collectors, young and old, who speak from the heart about how art has affected their lives. In addition, you can follow the journeys of two individuals who have commissioned their own paintings. A commission is a brave step and a big investment that was once the preserve of the gentry. Not any more, as the programme shows - now we can all own art!

Don’t miss the documentary, Tuesday 1 December 2009, BBC One, 10.35pm!

Wysing Arts Centre is launching a double this month.
Lee Marshall, Invader, 2009

15 November 2009 - Go back to Own Art November Bulletin

Introduced by special guest speaker Paul Hobson, Director of the Contemporary Art Society, Expanded presents four artists working in the Eastern region who are exploring the boundaries between painting and sculpture.

French artist Julie Brenot, one of Wysing’s studio artists, has been working on a series of paintings and drawings based on urban landscapes; reduced to create expanded and abstracted graphic images.

Working in drawing, sculpture and montage, David Kefford uses common place objects and everyday materials to create new hybrid objects with anthropomorphic sensibilities.

Lucy Conochie (MA, Slade School of Fine Art) and Lee Marshall (Norwich School of Art) are both recent graduates included in the show. Conochie takes architectural details as her starting point and paints directly onto walls and other surfaces whilst Marshall’s vibrant paintings incorporate the techniques of street art, graphic design, computer games and comics.

Wysing Arts Contemporary is a new initiative that Wysing began this year to provide both an opportunity to purchase exciting and affordable new work and show that buying art can positively impact on the careers of emerging artists.

With 24 studio artists working in a wide range of media at the centre, plus the development of international commissions, Wysing is providing a compelling platform for critically engaged work in the eastern region. It has also recently started a collectors group called the Wysing Collective, which is part of the nationwide group The Collective.

For collectors, curators, critics, dealers, artists and art enthusiasts, Zoo 2009 remains a considered introduction to the next generation of art professionals.

Zoo 2009 presents four significant exhibitions, curated by invited organisations and curators - FormContent, LUX, Studio Voltaire and Rob Tufnell - which will be displayed in unused Victorian industrial warehouses set in cobbled streets.

Once again, there will be solo shows by last year's winners of the Champagne Perrier-Jouët Prize - Scoli Acosta and John Jones Art on Paper Award - Clunie Reid.

Alongside these, up to 25 stand presentations from commercial and noncommercial organisations will be showcased within adjacent showrooms dating from the 1960s. Exhibitors are primarily under 6 years old and include international galleries, project spaces, artist collectives, curatorial groups and publishers.

In addition, there will be a section of up to 10 booths dedicated to artists' limited editions and multiples, presented by public and private institutions and organisations such as Whitechapel Gallery, ICA, Chisenhale Gallery and 176 / Zabludowicz Collection.

15 July 2009 - Go back to Own Art July Bulletin

Whether art expert or complete novice, Free Range is an exciting and free event open to everybody. It is the social, all-embracing qualities of Free Range that marks it out so distinctly from other art & design fairs. This vibrant and relaxing event is a celebration of the UK's latest young talent.

Week eight, the final week of Free Range 2009, presents a vibrant programme of mixed media work including Art and Photography, Illustration and Surface Design by graduates from Northumbria University, University of Plymouth, Staffordshire University, University of the West of England and University of the Arts LCC.

Tamsin O'Hanlon, the Director of Free Range, emphasizes this refreshingly open approach to art, "The concept of Free Range is multi-faceted. As the name suggests, the event presents artwork that is original and organic, that goes against the homogenous grain. It is also a chance for young people to display their work in a professional environment - the public has direct access to both the exhibits and the exhibitors, something that is rare for both the creators and the viewers."

The Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane is a natural backdrop for the event - a site steeped in history but which embraces the future. The many cafés, bars and restaurants in the Old Truman Brewery and the surrounding area provide the perfect place to unwind after a visit to the shows.

Together with its partners, London Graphic Centre, theprintspace, Dazed & Confused, Grafik and British Journal of Photography Free Range provides abundant support for the new generation of artists and designers, giving them the opportunity to present their work, perhaps for the first time, to the public.

How does The Collective work?

Group members contribute an agreed amount to the Birmingham's group art buying fund. Artworks are then selected, purchased and displayed in the group member’s homes. The group has a formal constitution and an accounting system based on the successful founding group in London which has been running for 7 years. Through joint collecting money is saved, knowledge is transferred and the visual art journey becomes more of an engaged social experience.

Who are The Collective Birmingham looking to recruit?

There are currently six group members in The Collective Birmingham who are looking for sociable individuals of similar artistic tastes who are open minded with an active interest in the Contemporary Visual Arts. Ideal candidates will have a little bit of free wall space, the ability to commit financially and some free time in the evenings for private views and meetings.

There is clearly the potential to build a valuable collection and the group values the journey, friendships and educational aspects being part of The Collective will bring.

Join The Collective Birmingham Studio visit

The Collective Birmingham invites you to join them in exploring the professional life of three local artists/groups with growing national and international reputations in the art world: Simon & Tom Bloor who recently had their first large scale solo exhibition As Long as it Lasts at Eastside Projects, Juneau Projects and Elizabeth Rowe.

Existing members of the group have decided that to show their commitment to supporting local galleries and artists, it will mark its formation through sponsorship of Eastside Projects Legacy Project for Eastside. A Silver Birch tree from Simon & Tom Bloor's recent show will be planted in the forthcoming City Park. The group will also acquire a limited edition print to begin its collection.

Highlights include Charlotte Hughes Martin's highly detailed engraved glass bottles based on the nursery rhyme Ten Green Bottles, Miranda Sharpe's exquisite necklace with moving parts made with ten feet of silver wire and Jim Sadler's limited edition of ten oak candle holders.

Alongside the work in the exhibition visitors can also discover how to commission a piece of craftwork. With details on how to research and approach a maker and information on how artists go about developing a piece from the brief to completion, the exhibition tells you everything you need to know to get started.

Own a piece of the exhibition!

On the last day of the exhibition, August 26 2009, 4.30 - 8.30pm, a silent auction will be held where you can bid for a work in the exhibition.

Those interested in bidding will be asked to fill in a slip of paper with your contact details, the name of the piece of work and your bid (all the items will have a reserve price, which will be the minimum that someone can bid for the piece).

Bids will be placed in a sealed box and at a fixed time towards the end of the evening the names of the highest bidders will be announced. Payment for the piece will be taken at this point, or an application to make the purchase using an Own Art loan can be made, and all works can be taken away on the night.

Bilston Craft Gallery hopes that this event will help raise the profile of craft and encourage the buying of craft - by both attracting existing craft buyers who may not have been to the Gallery before and also encouraging existing visitors to buy craft.

Strange Days and Some Flowers re-launches the newly refurbished Storey Gallery in Lancaster and is an opportunity to explore strange and uneasy work by a number of contemporary artists.

Strange Days and Some Flowers provides a rare opportunity to revisit a world we knew as children. Many of us will have imagined walking around on the ceiling, exploring a world which was familiar, but strange. Where beasties lurked in place of our jumpers, where up was down and grass looked a little bit like our shoe-laces. We had an innate ability to disassociate ourselves from reality, we saw the world from impossible angles, disorientated and surreal, but also playful, exciting and constantly shifting.

There is no 'theme', no curatorial thread, and no sheet of A4 'interpretation' to help you navigate through the space in a linear, formal manner. Instead you are invited into Graham Hudson's partially occluding maze, catching a frustrating glimpse of John Stark's spooky bee-keepers, metres away but not quite reachable. Several slightly disorientating minutes later, you're sharing an intimate booth of steel with a couple of Don Brown's alluring Yoko's. One shrouded, one stood elegant and proud in her pants, vest and platform shoes. In the considerably sparser second gallery, Mika Rottenberg's Tropical Breeze plunges you into a unique world of sweat, transportation and the odd naked man in running shoes.

The exhibition is intended as a celebration of the diversity of contemporary art practice, and as an exemplar of ambition and beacon of things to come in the North West of England at the Storey Gallery.

15 June 2009 - Go back to Own Art June bulletin

To celebrate 5 years of the Own Art scheme, Arts Council England, London teamed up with artist Charles Avery to offer readers of the Own Art bulletin and Time Out this unique opportunity to own a piece of his work.

'Own Art continues to help people across the country to kick start their own personal art collections in an affordable way. You may be thinking about starting your own personal collection, or perhaps you want to add to an existing one - either way this is a great piece of art that would be a fine addition to any collection. So log on and enter, and the best of luck to everyone!'

Moira Sinclair, Executive Director of Arts Council England, London

Avery is one of the UK's hottest talents and most talked about artists of recent times. He is famous for captivating audiences with his ongoing and epic piece - The Islanders, where he has spent over ten years describing the topology and cosmology of a bizarre imaginary island inspired by his childhood on the Inner Hebrides.

The artists work was recently seen in one of the art world's most influential exhibitions of the year - Tate Britain's fourth Triennial, Altermodern, which displayed the very best in new and contemporary work by British and International artists.

From 23rd June 2009, avid Avery followers keen to snap up the next installment of his epic Islanders project will be able to do so at The Hayward Gallery's summer exhibition, Walking in My Mind, which will delve into the often inaccessible, unknown and intriguing territory of the artistic mind, and where more explorations of Avery's bizarre island life will be on show.

Working across a range of media, Avery's work is characterised by formal beauty, humour and a spirit of philosophical enquiry. Generated out of complex research and intellectual rigour; his work pivots on the masterly uses of drawing, used in a variety of expressive forms. Notes of inspiration come from William Blake, PG Woodehouse, Jorge Luis Borges, Joseph Beuys and Joseph Kosuth, revealing themselves upon closer inspection with particular pieces.

Avery's work was shown at the Venice Biennale in 2003. In 2004 and 2006 the artist was nominated for the Jerwood Drawing Prize.
