Becoming a patron
"I think one of the most important things for a young collector to do is to join the patrons group of an institution. This means that they can network, learn very quickly about the various characters within the art world and glean a huge amount of information." Anita Zabludowicz, Collector, London (from "Owning Art: The Contemporary Art Collector's Handbook" by Louisa Buck and Judith Greer)
In addition to patron groups affiliated with museums and galleries such as Serpentine Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, Photographers' Gallery and Tate, there are numerous small organisations with Friends schemes. Annual subscription charges range from £25 upwards, and offer a range of different benefits, depending on the level of support. Joining the Friends or Patrons of an organisation can be very rewarding and brings with it all sorts of opportunities that can enhance your understanding and experience of the contemporary art world.
