Wrapped Up: The Devon Guild's Annual Christmas Exhibition

With Christmas just around the corner, we're all racking our brains for original ideas for presents. It's not easy, but help is at hand with The Devon Guild of Craftsmen!

Visitors can browse and purchase original gifts by over 60 makers chosen for affordability and functionality.
Because the emphasis at the Guild is not only hand-made but ‘contemporary’ craft, Wrapped Up features work using innovative design ideas: Daniel Kavanagh is this year’s Craft & Design ‘Best Newcomer’ whose pots fuse metal onto ceramic surfaces. The ’veiled jewellery’ of Yoko Izawa is named aptly from her interest in ’wrapping’. She combines lycra, metal and traditional Japanese techniques of knitting and dying. Her rings and bracelets evoke the fragility of shells and stone with vibrant frosted hues.
To buy such original, contemporary craft supports emerging businesses from the South West, such as Devon-based Hamble and Jemima (fantastic bags from recycled material) and Janine Partington, an increasingly collectible enameller from Bristol.
Wrapped Up is already showing proof of successful exhibition sales which is great news for the Guild and for the craftspeople it showcases. Director, Erica Steer says: ‘This really proves the value of investing in hand-made work by craftspeople committed to making in small studios with specialist tools and individual skills.’
