Avery is one of the UK's hottest talents and most talked about artists of recent times. He is famous for captivating audiences with his ongoing and epic piece - The Islanders, where he has spent over ten years describing the topology and cosmology of a bizarre imaginary island inspired by his childhood on the Inner Hebrides.
The artists work was recently seen in one of the art world's most influential exhibitions of the year - Tate Britain's fourth Triennial, Altermodern, which displayed the very best in new and contemporary work by British and International artists.
From 23rd June 2009, avid Avery followers keen to snap up the next installment of his epic Islanders project will be able to do so at The Hayward Gallery's summer exhibition, Walking in My Mind, which will delve into the often inaccessible, unknown and intriguing territory of the artistic mind, and where more explorations of Avery's bizarre island life will be on show.
Working across a range of media, Avery's work is characterised by formal beauty, humour and a spirit of philosophical enquiry. Generated out of complex research and intellectual rigour; his work pivots on the masterly uses of drawing, used in a variety of expressive forms. Notes of inspiration come from William Blake, PG Woodehouse, Jorge Luis Borges, Joseph Beuys and Joseph Kosuth, revealing themselves upon closer inspection with particular pieces.
Avery's work was shown at the Venice Biennale in 2003. In 2004 and 2006 the artist was nominated for the Jerwood Drawing Prize.
