Director of Exhibitions, Caroline Broadhurst gives an insight into the gallery, her tips on collecting and what not to miss at the EAF...
What is the ethos of Ingleby Gallery?
We run a yearly programme of exhibitions and projects by some of the best established and emerging contemporary artists working today, both in Scotland and internationally, which we hope provides an interesting and valuable contribution to the city and its inhabitants. In recent years, we have founded and since expanded a publishing programme of limited edition prints in order to make great works by interesting and important artists accessible to more people. We are committed to artists who make beautiful and intelligent work and to imaginative exhibitions which surprise and inspire.
What top tips would you give to first time buyers of art?
This may all sound quite obvious, but firstly, do lots of research and look at as much as possible: visit galleries, exhibitions, degree shows etc and ask lots of questions so you are familiar with different types of artists and artworks. Take advice and don't be afraid to talk to people in galleries, they are great sources of information. Buy something you love, but be aware that this may not necessarily be the first thing you fall for, so take your time. Buy the best you can afford, but also look out for more affordable limited edition prints and multiples, and take advantage of schemes like Own Art.

Susan Collis, Love is a charm of powerful trouble 2008
Wooden broom, white opals, yellow opals, Brazilian opals, cultured pearls, freshwater pearls, mother of pearl, white diamonds, black diamonds, sapphires, garnets, rubies, Labradorite, moonstone, white howlite, jadeite, citron crysoprase, turquoise, peridot, emerald
What are you most excited by in your exhibition programme at the Edinburgh Art Festival?
It's very difficult to say, as we are showing 3 fantastic artists during EAF - Kay Rosen, Susan Collis & Mark Wallinger, but I'm particularly keen to see people's reactions to Mark's inaugural Billboard for Edinburgh, and to Susan Collis' deceptive installation of ordinary things made from extraordinarily precious materials.
What should one not miss during the EAF as a whole?
I'm very excited that Richard Wilson is exhibiting during the EAF this year, he's a brilliant artist. I'm also looking forward to Alexander Heim's first solo exhibition at doggerfisher, to Andrew Grassie's incredible paintings at Talbot Rice, and to an unusual exhibition by Hugh Brady, who has turned his entire mews studio into an installation of wall drawings, paintings and objects.
Which artist is exciting you the most at the minute?
Ruth Ewen and Tommy Grace, both recent graduates of Edinburgh College of Art but now based in London, are two very different but equally interesting young artists.
