Own Art member gallery, doggerfisher, are just another of the exciting venues taking art in the Edinburgh Art Festival. As part of the festival, doggerfisher hosted an evening of refreshments and conversation on 13 August with the Scottish Arts Council around the specifics of collecting art for first time buyers. Find out more about this below. Make sure a trip to doggerfisher is an integral part of your experience of the festival.

The talk was an informal conversation between Susanna Beaumont of doggerfisher and art collector Jess Shaw. The Own Art scheme was briefly introduced at the gathering as a tool to get art collections started. Susanna and Jess proceeded to discuss a wide range of subjects relevant to collectors. Practical matters, such as insuring work, proper handling and care, and hanging techniques were part of the conversation.

The talk also comprehensively covered personal and philosophical issues related to collecting, such as the relationship between gallerist, collector, and artist; personal choices about how and where to place work in the home; and speculating on the impact that having art work in the home might have on the budding creativity of young people. After the talk, guests viewed the current exhibition at doggerfisher of the work of Alexander Heim and also browsed the doggerfisher artist files.
To further promote conversation around collecting contemporary art and to promote the Own Art scheme, the Visual Arts Department at the Scottish Arts Council plans to hold similar events in future.
