Bobby Molavi
"Make your mistakes through buying"
Bobby Molavi lives in West London, is in his twenties and has just moved in to his first flat. He began buying art three years ago when his aunt and uncle brought him along to the first Frieze Art Fair. He promptly discovered an image he loved by Louisa Lambri, being shown by a US based gallery. It was more than he could afford, but the gallery allowed him to pay the work over the course of a year, so he leaped in.
Bobby recognises the process of training one's eye over time, but also relies heavily on personal enjoyment of the work - rather than listening to what others deem good or important.
When he first began to visit exhibitions and galleries around London, he found tours organised by Blood (Contemporary Art Society) invaluable in providing an entry point with galleries and artists' work. Over time he has built a relationship with a select number of contemporary galleries and dealers.
Although he usually leans towards photography, Bobby does not buy with any particular theme in mind and he buys from a mix of gallery shows, auctions and art fairs. With the benefit of hindsight, he advises against buying too much too quickly and favours investing in more substantial work and fewer pieces.
More recently, he has begun to look at work by more established figures, who have been influential for the younger artists in his collection.
