Rob Lee and The Collective

Rob and his family live in Crouch End, North London. The family have a very interesting collecting style that started about 7 years ago with a group of friends.

The idea ('The Collective') is based on each of 7 households making regular payments of around £60 per month into a joint account. When enough money has accrued, a rotating panel will decide on a new purchase and present it to the whole group. They regularly rotate the work, so each household lives with every piece for a time before the collection is rotated again.

Direct contact with the artists who work is selected is important to the group, as this presents an opportunity for discussion and investigating new or more difficult art forms. They all often attend openings together and there has been a lot of group discussion over the years. As they have grown more used to working together and have become more confident, they are becoming more experimental.

They often work with curators who make recommendations and create contacts with artists and organisations and the group is now thinking about commissioning a live art piece, which would be performed specially for them.

The Collective have recently been funded by the Arts Council to develop their unique model for wider use. Further information see www.the-collective.info
