Thomas Frangenberg
Thomas Frangenberg is a German Art Historian and writer who has been living in London for over 20 years. For most of that time he has been living in the same apartment, which becomes clear as one sees the number of works hung in each room, and the many others stored in a multitude of ways. Every surface is stacked with art historical books and contemporary art works, be they original paintings by Angela de la Cruz or editioned sculptures such as Liam Gillick's wastepaper basket for Whitechapel Gallery.
Thomas is passionate about contemporary art and artists and has been from his student days, when he began to regularly commit about a third of his income to buying art. His approach to collecting has always been to deal directly with artists, usually before they have begun to work with galleries or have representation.
One very unique aspect of Thomas' style of collecting is that he has for years been buying work using a system not unlike Own Art. He has arranged direct debit payments to artists over a period of time. Amazingly, all of the artists were always happy to work this way with him and it has given rise to great friendships over the years. He usually never spends more than around £2000 per artwork.
