Open Doors
Creative career opportunities for young people in theatreBackstage is the new onstage
Open Doors is an exciting series of nationwide events as part of the Arts Council’s Young People’s Participatory Theatre (YPPT) project. This three-year DCMS funded initiative aims to develop youth and participatory theatre, encompassing the full range of theatre practice including circus and street arts.
Throughout the month of November 2007, venues across the country will open their doors to young people in a series of interactive events and workshops highlighting careers in the theatre. Our aim is to make young people aged 15 plus aware of employment and participatory opportunities in theatre, particularly those relating to backstage, technical and front of house.
Each venue will organise a unique event with a variety of local partners including:
- other venues and performing arts companies
- regional Arts Council offices
- industry organisations and management associations
- drama schools
- vocational training organisations
- young people’s groups
Open Doors is a fantastic opportunity for young people of all backgrounds to engage with theatre professionals in a dynamic, hands-on way. By meeting in-the-know arts professionals, they will be able to find out where to train, what career routes are open to them and how to use their skills in a sector they may not otherwise consider.
What will the day look like? Our host venues are literally opening their doors for the day, both front of house and backstage. Each event will be tailored to reflect the facilities and resources available in the region. As well as discovering what makes a theatre work and what creative and technical components go into realising a production, there will be a mix of:
- informative, structured tours of the building
- interactive taster sessions and workshops
- talks and information sharing
- a market place/exhibition providing information from vocational training and arts organisations
The good news is that Open Doors does not end once the day draws to a close. As part of our ongoing YPPT project, we are developing a new, interactive website where interested young people can find local or national advice, information and guidance to help develop their career aspirations. The site will go live soon, and we will keep you posted on our developments.
