Yorkshire Artspace develops new studios in Parson Cross

Yorkshire Artspace has received an award from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to support community engagement activity through artist residencies and a starter studio programme at Knutton Road, Sheffield.

The project has been developed as part of a unique partnership between Yorkshire Artspace, Sheffield City Council, Arts Council England and Eventus to deliver high quality arts programmes and art in the public realm as part of neighbourhood regeneration in Sheffield.

The award of £75,000 has been made to support a series of artist residencies and collaborative projects with the community of Parson Cross, Sheffield, over three years. As part of this programme there will also be a business start-up scheme for artists interested in working in the fields of regeneration and community arts based at the Knutton Road Studios. A key aim of the development as a whole is to help local people start new businesses by providing affordable accommodation and business support and advice. Yorkshire Artspace will run the artist studio complex situated within the building. 

Rachael Dodd, Programme Manager, Yorkshire Artspace, said: 'Over the next three years and beyond we want to explore "how artists can help to create a successful neighbourhood" reflecting the current changes happening within Parson Cross through Creative Places and the Housing Market Renewal regeneration initiative. We want to get to know the community of Parson Cross better and understand what makes it unique. This award will enable us to provide opportunities for discussion, participation and collaboration between artists and our soon-to-be new neighbours.'
