Chrysalis Arts, the North Yorkshire-based arts and creative industries development agency and an Arts Council regularly funded organisation, is carrying out new research to identify writers, musicians and performing artists who are living and working in North Yorkshire. The aim is to develop a more complete picture of the 'creative arts economy' of the sub-region, to inform future support and development opportunities.
Chrysalis has been commissioned by North Yorkshire County Council, with support from Arts Council England, Yorkshire, to undertake a programme of research and development activity to gain a greater and more detailed understanding of the economic activity in the sub-region’s arts sector.
The first phase was the creation of the Creative North Yorkshire to provide relevant training, funding and other information to arts practitioners in York and North Yorkshire and enable them to publicise their activities. The next phase is to find out more about the numbers and needs of people working in the fields of literature and the performing arts, particularly music, but also dance, theatre and puppetry.
A questionnaire is being distributed widely to individuals and organisations working in these areas. A number of networking days later in the year will bring together people working in the sector, where they will have the chance to meet representatives of regional and national agencies offering development services for arts practitioners working in the different artform areas.
Chrysalis has been providing information and professional development services for visual artists and craftspeople for over a decade and has helped numerous North Yorkshire visual artists to further their careers. This new initiative is designed to put practitioners in touch with agencies that provide similar services in other artforms and to find out where there are gaps that need to be filled.
The four-page questionnaire is being distributed electronically and should be returned by Friday 24 July. It is available in hard copy from the Chrysalis office (phone 01756 748529) and can be downloaded from Creative North Yorkshire
The survey is being supported by Business Link Yorkshire and is being carried out by Chrysalis in conjunction with Miles Salter, a writer, musician and researcher based in York.
More information is available from Ian Gasse at Chrysalis Arts on 01756 748529 or 01743 357551.
