In partnership with LGA, we’ve developed a hub for local authorities to share best practice when planning cultural services in their area.

The Good Practice in Culture Hub is made up of case studies from around the country that show how local councils are dealing with challenging circumstances and investing in arts and culture.

Local Authorities are the biggest funder of arts and culture in England. They support cultural activity in their areas in order to provide their residents with a better quality of life, to promote tourism, stimulate the local economy, and build their area’s reputation – creating a unique sense of place.

However, across the country local authorities are facing difficult budgetary decisions - and this is increasing the pressure on funding for arts and culture. Despite this many local councils are still choosing to back culture, and they’re coming up with a range of innovative ideas to do so.

The Culture Hub can help authorities considering how they can support culture, by giving them insight into how other councils have addressed similar challenges.

The case studies explore four main themes.

  • Value of culture
  • Different delivery models
  • Achieving efficiencies
  • Inspiring leadership

We want the hub to stay relevant and provide on-going support to those planning cultural services within councils.

We’ll keep adding to the hub over the next few months to build a database of experience and learning that help improve practice across the board.
