Zimbabwean music course with Chartwell Dutiro

Zimbabwean musician and ethnomusicologist Chartwell Dutiro will be leading a one week course at ICIA at the University of Bath.

Chartwell Dutiro is the founder and Artistic Director of Mhararano -- The Mbira Academy. Specialising in the music traditions of his native Zimbabwe, he teaches through community singing, dance and mbira playing. Sessions for the course will include work with call and response, hand-clapping, poly rhythms, cross rhythms, polyphonics, hocketing and movement. The course also involves an exploration of the Zimbabwean Shona ancestral belief system and historical connections between the British Empire and Zimbabwe.

The five day course runs from Mon 11 to Fri 15 July 2011 and there will be an associated concert on June 22.
