WE PLAY is the North West cultural legacy programme for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
The aim of the programme is to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and to ensure the Games also leave a lasting cultural legacy for the North West.
WE PLAY is a series of new, innovative and complementary programmes in the North West. It combines digital, physical and virtual participation opportunities for people from all walks of life. It integrates year round public events, community programmes and the development of new work.
WE PLAY consists of three annual programmes which run over four years in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games from April 2009 until December 2012. These programmes are: Abandon Normal Devices, Lakes Alive and Blaze. They form the core of the cultural activities for the North West contribution to the Cultural Olympiad, spanning digital culture, street arts and youth engagement in culture and sport. These programmes are catalysts for wider development and activity in the region and develop opportunities for cultural organisations and communities to get involved. The WE PLAY project also includes a fourth programme for delivery in 2012 as a platform for showcasing and promoting WE PLAY initiatives.
The programmes which make up WE PLAY are:
The WE PLAY programme and its producers mark the beginning of a significant new partnership initiative. The producers and the programmes span the North West and pull together partners from culture, education and sport.
Dugald Mackie, Chair of the Legacy Trust UK, said: "The Games are about more than sport. They are a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase the North West to millions of people across the world. We believe that these projects will inspire and encourage people throughout the North West to get involved and will help leave a lasting legacy for the region."
Legacy Trust UK
The Legacy Trust UK is an independent body set up in the UK to help build a cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and ensure that the benefits of the Games will be felt across the UK, not just in London.
Relationship of Legacy projects to Cultural Olympiad
The Trust is coordinating its work with that of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). It is expected that many of the projects that the Trust funds will be eligible for inclusion in the programme for the Cultural Olympiad, which is a key element of the 2012 Games. Legacy Trust UK funded projects are not automatically part of the Cultural Olympiad. Many of them may well be included in the programme over time or be eligible to use the 'Inspired by' brand, and the Legacy Trust UK and the regional Creative Programmers are working closely with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games to this end.
