An immersive sound art space in the centre of Trafalgar square has been announced as one of the events for this September's London Design Festival.
The BE OPEN Sound Portal, a collaboration between the festival - an Arts Council National portfolio organisation - and global creative initiative BE OPEN, will focus on 'design you can't see' using a series of three-dimensional soundscapes created by leading musicians and sound designers.
Visitors to the portal - designed by Arup and Sound and Music - will be encouraged to focus on sound and their responses to it, while standing in one the busiest squares in the world.
Elena Baturina, founder of the BE OPEN Foundation, said: 'We've set up BE OPEN so that we can work with the great creative minds of today. The designers of the BE OPEN Sound Portal and those who will be creating soundscapes for it are at the cutting edge: they are the future of acoustic evolution. So a journey into the BE OPEN Sound Portal is a must for anyone interested in hearing what tomorrow will be like.'
Artists already chosen to work on the project include Jana Winderen and Russian artist Ivan Pavlov. A full programme of commissions will be announced in July 2012.
