Sir Peter Bazalgette appointed new Chair of Arts Council England

  • Date: 5 September 2012
  • Area: National

Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport Jeremy Hunt has appointed Sir Peter Bazalgette as the new Chair of Arts Council England.

Sir Peter will succeed Dame Liz Forgan, who has been Chair of Arts Council England since February 2009. She will remain in the role until her four year tenure comes to an end on 31 January 2013.

The Chair provides strategic leadership to the Arts Council and acts as an ambassador and advocate for arts and culture in England.

Sir Peter is currently Chair of English National Opera, following a lifetime in television production where he was Creative Director of Endemol until 2007.

He commented: '2013 will be an excellent time to join the Arts Council, following the success of the London 2012 Festival and the launch of The Space in 2012.  Sustaining our vigorous arts and cultural sector is admittedly a challenge but one I greatly look forward to.'

Alan Davey, Chief Executive, Arts Council England said: 'This is an excellent appointment. Peter is a great philanthropic contributor to the arts; an enthusiast who has done amazing work with English National Opera and has helped the Arts Council over the years to develop our digital thinking. We look forward to working with him.'

Following a Cabinet reshuffle we are also welcoming Maria Miller MP who succeeds Jeremy Hunt as Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport. Alan Davey added: 'Maria assumes this important post at a time when arts and culture are doing well in this country, but there will be challenges ahead. Securing the legacy of the hugely successful Cultural Olympiad, and seizing the opportunities provided by the cultural and creative industries to define who we are as a nation and drive economic growth, will be vital, and it’s important that we have a Secretary of State who understands the brief and why it matters, and who will seek its proper recognition within Government. We look forward to working with and helping the new Secretary of State in this important role.'
