A new play has been created exploring the lives, loves and battles surrounding Plymouth's famous Tinside Lido.
Listed Theatre company have been gathering people's stories to use in their performance which has been specially created to be performed in the Lido.
Actors wearing swimsuits from a range of periods in history will perform in different locations around the Lido, telling the story of Tinside and other lidos throughout Britain.
The project has received £9000 funding from Arts Council England with a further £7700 funding from Heritage Lottery Fund. Plymouth City Council provided £200 funding as well as in kind support. Theatre Royal Plymouth and the Barbican Theatre have also provided in kind support.
Jessica Manley, producer of the new play, Listed Lido, said:
"Memories of swimmers' fortitude during the blitz, to the first ever bikinis, these magnificent pools saw generations of teenagers showing off (some in the well-known Tinside beauty pageants) and trained swimmers to brave the channel.
"It is this cross section of society Listed Lido brings to life, celebrating the newly regenerated Tinside Lido whilst documenting the battles to save other British lidos under threat of closure or demolition. It is so important that we save these lidos which are valuable urban oases, fusing the ideals of democracy with inspiring architecture."
Arts Council England's Director for the South West, Phil Gibby said:
"This exciting theatre project gives the people of Plymouth the opportunity to tell their own stories about the Lido and to see how they are interpreted by Listed Theatre as part of the performance. I hope that this unusual venue will attract new people to experience live theatre."
Listed Lido will be performed between 30 July and 7 August (no performance on Tues 2 August). Tickets priced £9.50 are available from Theatre Royal Plymouth website or on 01752 267222.
