The Japanese tea ceremony comes to Bath. Credit: Folding Cosmos
An exhibition of contemporary Japanese design and a series of Japanese tea ceremonies are coming to Bath as part of a Grants for the arts funded project coordinated by visual artist Paul Tew.
The Folding Cosmos Exhibition has toured to Sapporo, Japan and New York, and will be at Bath Artists' Studios Gallery from Saturday 28 April to Wednesday 2 May 2012.
Visitors will have the opportunity to experience a tea ceremony and to create origami pieces and messages to contribute to a peace installation.
Folding Cosmos is based on a touring Japanese tea house which takes inspiration from the Japanese explorer Takeshiro Matsuura. Matsuura's One Mat Room was built as a tranquil setting to reflect upon a life of travels and shared experiences, as well as the traditional Japanese tea ceremony which treasures every meeting as a once in a lifetime experience. The exhibition is a contemporary interpretation of the two themes, created by seven furniture designers, artists and ceramicists. Paula Tew's contribution of textile and wood pieces will add a further element to the exhibition focusing on symbolism within traditional Japanese design motifs.
Bath Artists' Studios administrator Lucy Ward commented
"Bath Artists' Studios are very pleased to host the international collaboration between Folding Cosmos and studio artist, Paula Tew. The artists' studios are a place for the sharing of ideas and creative practice, so we are excited to expand this into our exhibition programme, and look forward to an informative creative exchange."
Paula Tew explained
"Japan has been an enormous inspiration to me since my time spent living there and so I am excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with the Folding Cosmos project and to bring another element to the exhibition."
In addition to funding from The National Lottery through Arts Council Grants for the arts funding, the exhibition is also supported by Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.
The exhibition is open 11am to 5pm from Saturday 28 April to Wednesday 2 May 2012 at Bath Artists' Studios Gallery. Tea ceremony times, booking and further information are available on the Folding Cosmos website.
