The new Greater Manchester Music Hub was launched on Monday 19 November with performances from music ensembles and choirs from across the region including steel pan group Salford Steel, Trafford Jazz Collective, Oldham Youth Orchestra, Bolton Youth Chamber Strings, Bolton Youth Harmonies, Wigan flamenco guitarist Louis Brookes and guitar and vocal group Du'Montts. Peter Salmon, Director of BBC North gave the welcome speech and reinforced the BBC's commitment to music programming, education and learning.
The Hub, an innovative partnership between nine local music services and 13 regional and national partner organisations, has been set up to safeguard and develop the music education for children and young people across the Greater Manchester region. One of 122 hubs established by Arts Council England earlier this year, it includes the music services from Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan.
Carolyn Baxendale, Head of Bolton Music Service said, "This is brilliant news for music education in our region. As we work together with our partners, we are finding new ideas and better ways of doing things. Every child should have the opportunity to play an instrument, make progress, sing and perform with others and through the Hub we now have a real chance to make this a reality."
Aiming to ensure that every child aged 5-18 has the opportunity to sing and learn a musical instrument as well as to perform music with others as part of an ensemble, the Hubs will work with partner organisations to ensure a joined-up approach linking up children's activity both in and out of school.
Jane Beardsworth, Regional Director, Arts Council England commented, "The Music Education Hubs will provide a new way of delivering high quality music education through partnerships with professional arts organisations, musicians, venues, composers and teachers. This is just the type of activity which will help us to achieve our strategic goal of ensuring that every child and young person has the opportunity to experience the richness of the arts."
Further information about the Hub can be found on their website.
