People from across the West Midlands are developing their skills and working together in Imagineer Productions' Godiva Awakes project, part of Artists taking the lead Read more about Artists taking the lead here.

This is one of a series of 12 public art commissions across the UK supported by Arts Council England to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

In January and May 2011 over 100 people, of all singing abilities, joined Imagineer and composer Ilona Sekacz in open auditions in Birmingham and Worcestershire to sing their way to a place on the Godiva Awakes Choir. The choir in 2012 will be made up of 150 voices from across the region, including members from Birmingham, Coventry, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. The full choir will perform for the first time in July 2011 as part of the Godiva Festival in Coventry.

Last month the 100 strong Godiva Awakes Cycle Team took part in their second joint training session at Ricoh Arena in Coventry and powered a prototype Cyclopedia for the first time. The team is made up of novice and experienced cyclists from across the region.

April also saw 220 young people share performances developed over the last four months exploring themes of equality, fairness and social justice in their own communities. The performance groups from Stoke-on-Trent, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire, the Black Country, Rugby, Warwickshire, Birmingham and Coventry are referred to as the Communitas. Between now and July 2012 the groups will work in their own areas to explore the themes of the project through theatre, carnival and dance.

Imagineer Productions are creating a six-metre high Godiva, who will awake in July 2012 to a spectacular performance and, powered by 50 cyclists a day, journey to London to play a part in the London 2012 celebrations. After the games Godiva will return to Coventry.

Over 1000 people are currently part of the Godiva Awakes project. To find out more visit:
