Artists and earth scientists will be collaborating in Exploratory Laboratory – a project to investigate the Jurassic Coast through the visual arts. An exhibition at Bridport Arts Centre marks the start of the project.
Exploratory Laboratory will investigate the earth science and coastal processes revealed along the Jurassic Coast. Resident artists will create new temporary artworks, in response to places and communities, to be shown in buildings, open air locations and galleries along the coast path in 2012.
At the heart of the project is a collaboration between artists and earth scientists to explore the unique geology of the coast and arrive at new ways of seeing and understanding it. The project will inspire artists and engage the public in the coast’s past, present and future, both locally and globally.
This is the first project organised by Big Picture, a collaboration of seven visual arts organisations in Dorset – Artsreach, Bridport Arts Centre, Dorset Visual Arts, PVA MediaLab, Sherborne House Arts, Sherborne School and Walford Mill Crafts – working with Dorset County Council, Dorset Design and Heritage Forum and the Jurassic Coast Arts Programme.
The 30-month project starts with an exhibition at Bridport Arts Centre (18 September to 23 October 2010) showing the methods and technology being used to monitor and manage the Jurassic Coast alongside works by artists who are exploring these and similar techniques. An active programme of demonstrations, talks and hands-on workshops offer opportunities to find out more, and a symposium will bring together artists and earth scientists to kickstart collaborations between them.
